Today is a big day for PS5 software beta testers. Since the start of the program last month there hasn’t been a whole lot for beta testers to do, but today the waiting is over with a brand new software release.
There are a bunch of neat features added in the beta update, including support for M.2 SSDs to expand the PS5's storage capacity and a new way to use the DualSense's microphone to test your room's acoustics and automatically select the best 3D Audio settings.

But the strangest new feature might be the ability to select between different versions of PS4 games that have a next-gen upgrade. The beta software lets you see and select between the PS4 version or the upgraded PS5 version of certain games, letting you play whichever version you prefer.
For the most part, it's hard to think of a reason to play the older version of a game as PS5 optimization mostly lets older games run faster on newer hardware. That's why most PS5 upgrade packages let games run at 60fps and often higher than 1080p resolution. But what if you’re taking your PS5 to your grandma's house and she’s got an older TV? Being able to play the older PS4 version might be more useful in this specific situation.
There are other cool new features too, like the ability to keep track of up to five Trophies in the new Trophy Tracker. To sign up for the PS5 beta, head on over to PlayStation's site for instructions.
