With Free Guy’s finally premiering this weekend Ryan Reynolds is firing his last-gasp efforts to promote the movie, only this time that requires enlisting the help of his internet nemesis Hugh Jackman, though certain conditions may apply.
Reynolds and Jackman go way back since the pair met when filming X-Men Origins, the first and much-derided appearance for Wade Wilson in a film that has become the stuff of memes. This encounter has transformed the pairs public relationships where they constantly pose as sworn enemies and often take part in each other’s entrepreneurial facets, given Jackman’s foray into ethically grown coffee and Reynolds countless ventures with Aviation Gin, English soccer clubs, Mint Mobile, and quite aptly his own ad agency.

To celebrate their friendship Jackman’s Laughing Man Coffee company will be giving out free coffee this Friday when Free Guy releases in North America, although sadly this offer will only be available for those who swing by the company's shop on 184 Duane Street in New York. Considering Free Guy’s aptly named NPC protagonist Guy and his friend Buddy are always drinking coffee in their video game lives, maybe Laughing Man will be getting some product placement in the film.
Naturally, Laughing Man can’t satisfy the coffee needs of everyone in New York so this special offer is capped at a “while supplies last” limit, however, the move just further proves Reynolds’ commitment to his film projects. After all, the actor already suited up as Deadpool for the mercenary’s first MCU crossover as part of another promotional stunt that may have been made possible by Free Guy co-star Taika Waititi.
Free Guy will be opening with rave reviews backing the movie’s gaming credentials, an aspect the film is obviously eager to tap into as seen in the Free Guy-themed posters inspired by video game icons, while also promising a bunch of game-related easter eggs spread out across its near two-hour runtime. There’s currently even a Free Guy Xbox Series S giveaway available for anyone who just hasn’t been able to get their hands on the console to play all those great Xbox Game Pass games.
As video game movies continue to get better, Free Guy’s director is aware of the challenge behind making the transition from interactive to passive media, which might just make the film’s PG-13 Grand Theft Auto setting more interesting.
Free Guy is scheduled for release in theaters on August 13, 2021.
