It's been rumored that Rockstar Games has plans to release a remastered collection of three classic Grand Theft Auto games later this year. This rumor comes from video game outlet Kotaku, which claims that three reliable anonymous sources have confirmed that these GTA remasters are in the final stages of development, and that Rockstar is targeting a release alongside the next-gen versions of GTA 5.

Kotaku also reports that these remasters will be GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas, and will launch for next-gen consoles and even Nintendo Switch. All three are allegedly being remastered using Unreal Engine with a balance between "new and old graphics." The UI will also be getting an overhaul, but will still retain each game's classic feel as Rockstar apparently wants to "stay true to the PS2-era GTA games as much as possible."

As always with these kinds of rumors, none of this is concrete, so be sure to take everything you read here with a pinch of salt. However, we do know that Rockstar has teased something in the past regarding GTA's 20th anniversary, and that publisher Take-Two's recent actions surrounding modding support for its older GTA titles suggests something GTA related is on the way.

In case you missed the news, Take-Two has been issuing DMCA takedowns to several GTA fan mods and projects over the past few months. This includes the reversed engineered GTA 3 and Vice City mod which drastically improves the game's performance and visuals, although this mod has since been restored with no further legal action from Take-Two at the time of writing.

For now, the only confirmed GTA release on the horizon is the next-gen version of GTA 5 which will include "a range of technical improvements, visual upgrades, and performance enhancements to take full advantage of the latest hardware," and has recently been confirmed to run in 4K at 60fps on PS5. GTA 5: Enhanced Edition will launch on November 11 for PS5 and Xbox Series X.
