A.S. Roma Manager Jose Mourinho Calls Fortnite A Nightmare

A.S. Roma manager Jose Mourinho isn’t a stranger to headlines. The Portuguese tactician is considered one of the best football managers of the modern era thanks to his achievements with F.C. Ports, Chelsea, and Real Madrid. His time with Manchester United and Tottenham however, wasn’t all that newsworthy. But it looks like we’ve finally got a chance to write about the self proclaimed Special One, thanks to his opinions on Fortnite.

Mourinho was featured in Roma’s Rapid Responses video series, where players and staff are asked their opinions on various things in a rapid-fire format. Mourinho talked about the history, power, and passion of the city of Rome, how difficult it’s been settling into the city, his favourite Italian dishes, and Fortnite.

Unfortunately for fans of the battle royale, it seems Mourinho doesn’t think too much of it. Not because he’s tried playing it or anything, but because of how distracting it is to players. “A nightmare,” said Mourinho when asked about Fortnite. “Football players, they stay up all night playing that shit. And the next day they have a game.”

Mourinho is far from the first manager to complain about players getting distracted due to Fortnite. A number of club managers would rant about it back when the game was soaring to popularity. Younger players would often spend the night playing the game with their teammates instead of resting before a big game. Players would get so into the game that they’d even perform Fortnite dances and emotes to celebrate scoring goals on the pitch.

Epic Games leveraged this popularity and even featured some professional players in the game. Neymar was introduced to Fortnite in April, along with his very own set of challenges to unlock additional skins. The Neymar Jr. Cup was also created where players could win a custom-designed football boot. England's Harry Kane and Germany's Marco Reus also made their way to the game ahead of the Euro 2020 tournament.

In other football-video game crossover news, EA recently showcased the Hypermotion technology coming to FIFA 22 via a trailer. The technology is based on extensive motion capture, enabling AI players to move and perform like their real life counterparts.
