The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is one of the most maligned 3D Zelda titles, but with the launch of the game on Nintendo Switch, complete with quality of life improvements and better overall visuals, Nintendo is hoping to see Skyward Sword HD become a success.

And as with all of Nintendo's new games, amiibo functionality is included – though what's here might be one of the most limited and disappointing uses of amiibo in a Nintendo game yet. If you're wondering why, you can find out by scrolling down below.

In this guide we've surmised everything you can do with amiibo – and I do mean everything – at launch of Skyward Sword HD. It's always possible that in the future more amiibo will be released, or that Skyward Sword HD will be updated for use with more amiibo figures, but right now, below you'll find a complete function guide.

How To Use Amiibo In Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

Before you are able to use amiibo in Skyward Sword HD, you must go into your Options menu. Press the Plus button, and then make your way to Options in the bottom left of your Gear screen.

Here you will find the option to use amiibo is turned off by default – you'll need to change the amiibo option to say "Use amiibo". Once this is in place, it's easy to access amiibo functions at any time.

Once this is activated, you can press down on the d-pad buttons to bring up Fi, and there will be a fourth option here to use amiibo. Note: this only works while you're on the surface, and not while running around Skyloft.

Which Amiibo Are Compatible With Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

As of right now, the only amiibo compatible with Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is the Zelda & Loftwing amiibo, one created for the launch of Skyward Sword HD. Sadly, this amiibo has been sold out for some time, and unless you've already managed to pre-order the figure – or you're prepared to raid shops on launch day – then you will be out of luck.

Sadly, no other amiibo are currently compatible with Skyward Sword HD. This is disappointing, as games like Breath of the Wild and even Age of Calamity had amiibo functions which gifted you bonus items – something that would make the grind for upgrade materials infinitely easier in Skyward Sword. Unfortunately, there's no option for any of that as of yet, though we can hope the game gets some kind of update in the future.

What Amiibo Do In Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

The only amiibo that currently works in Skyward Sword HD is the Zelda & Loftwing amiibo, as outlined above. That's not a lot of amiibo to break down, but luckily we can detail what it does.

The Zelda & Loftwing amiibo will, when scanned, allow Link to return to the Sky from the surface at any point, granting easy access to visit shops and complete side quests – or perhaps raid Goddess Chests, if that's what you're aiming for. Use the amiibo again, and you'll be able to return to the exact same point, making it simple to explore the surface world and go back at any time.
