Asmongold Reveals Why He Won’t Play Genshin Impact

Genshin Sayu Burst Trailer Cropped

Some content creators can have a major impact on the landscape of certain games due to their expertise after years of playing and outspoken opinions. One of these streamers is Asmongold, whose departure from World of Warcraft to Final Fantasy 14 is credited with playing a part in Final Fantasy 14's popularity spike.

This is not the only new game that Asmongold has tried since leaving WoW exclusivity, although it seems Final Fantasy 14 is the one he has enjoyed the most. During a recent stream reacting to Gamescom announcements, Asmongold made his opinion on another game known: Genshin Impact. His words for Genshin Impact were not exactly encouraging, as he explained why he won't play the game.

Compared to previous criticisms from Asmongold, such as his scathing critique of New World's job system, his reasoning for not picking up Genshin Impact was brief, but concise. During a promotional moment for Genshin Impact at Gamescom, Asmongold remarked he would try the game if it didn't have "all that bulls***" in it. While Asmongold didn't expand on what bullshit he was referring to, it's not hard to guess that he probably meant the monetization in Genshin Impact.

Asmongold has been critical of titles for including monetization in certain aspects before, and he would hardly be the first to criticize Genshin Impact on its myriad ways to seperate players from their money. Genshin Impact is replete with Gacha mechanics where players purchase packs that may or may not give them the weapons, materials, or characters that they're hunting for. Compared to other games that Asmongold has been streaming recently, including his well recorded thoughts on Final Fantasy 14, Genshin Impact has less interaction and less control over power progression for a player. The main reason for this is, again, the fact that more powerful characters are locked behind Gacha mechanics.

Despite being an offhand comment, it's likely that at least a few of Asmongold's fans will want him to elaborate, since Genshin Impact is enjoyed by many. It likely won't be hard to do, since Asmongold is no stranger to making his opinions known. He was not shy about calling World of Warcraft's community "trash," so the exact bullshit he's referring to here may be known soon.

Still, Genshin Impact is not exactly hanging on any streamer's approval at the moment, even Asmongold's. With a trailer highlighting Genshin Impact's upcoming features recently released, odds are the game's community will continue to be satisfied. But who knows, maybe Asmongold will overturn another game with his criticism.

Genshin Impact is available on PC, Mobile, PS4, and PS5.
