Assassin’s Creed Creator Once Had a Very Different Ending in Mind for Desmond’s Story

Assassin's Creed fans are currently taking a trip down memory road, it seems. A popular post in Reddit's Assassin's Creed community pulled up an old interview with franchise creator Patrice Désilets. Désilets ultimately only worked on Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed 2, and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, departing Ubisoft before the conclusion of the series' first story arc. In this interview, however, Désilets discusses his "first spark" idea for how the story of Desmond and the Animus should end.

The interview in question comes from 2017 when the now-defunct Assassin's Creed Initiates program interviewed Désilets about some of his past work on the franchise. Désilets is asked about the "original" plan for the end of Assassin's Creed's story as it was first planned. Désilets refers to his "first spark," which may or may not be the original plan but was at the very least Désilets' first idea. Needless to say, it's a shocking choice that unfortunately never came to fruition.

Désilets says that his "first spark" idea was to have the world end in 2012, as was foretold in the Assassin's Creed games. It appears that Désilets would have followed through with the Mayan calendar's prediction and had the solar flare end all life on Earth. Desmond, however, would survive. He and Lucy would escape the destruction on a spaceship. Not exactly a happy ending after all of the players' efforts, but it would certainly have been daring.

AC creator originally had Desmond and Lucy survive the 2012 apocalypse on a spaceship as a new Adam and Eve. from

After escaping the destruction of Earth, Desmond and Lucy would use the Animus to "learn how to become perfect human beings." They'd then start humanity all over again, using all of humanity's past experiences so as to make a better world and society. Desmond and Lucy would, in effect, have become Adam and Eve, with all the knowledge granted by the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge.

Obviously, that's not the ending that happened in Assassin's Creed 3 or any of the other Assassin's Creed games since. Désilets left Ubisoft in 2010 and the Assassin's Creed franchise took Desmond's story in a completely different direction. Désilets himself may already have planned a wildly different ending as part of his earlier games, as this ending was just his "first spark."

Looking back, it's impossible to tell which direction would have been better for Assassin's Creed. Desmond's story ended up being widely criticized, but not destroying the world allowed the Assassin's Creed franchise to continue. Ubisoft obviously prefers this way, but fans might have chosen a proper ending — even if it resulted in Earth ending.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
