Axiom Verge 2 Will Be Available Later Today

During Nintendo's Indie World Showcase stream today, a quick trailer revealed that indie Metroidvania game Axiom Verge 2 would be releasing on Nintendo's console later today. A Twitter post from creator Tom Happ shortly after confirmed that it would also be hitting PC and PS4 alongside the Switch port. This shadowdrop was the most surprising bit of news during the show. Axiom Verge 2 has been delayed numerous times and many were wondering when we'd eventually see it. I guess there's no better time than the present.

I had forgotten that the PC version would be a timed exclusive on the Epic Games Store, but Happ also mentioned that the PS5 port would be releasing sometime later this year. I don't see the big rush for a native PS5 version when Sony's console is backward compatible, but I suppose it might have 4K resolution output. That is sure to make the pixel art aesthetic of Axiom Verge 2 really shine.

As the trailer above shows, Axiom Verge released in 2015 to critical acclaim. Eventually making its way to every platform over the last six years (including Wii U!), many believe that the success of this indie game showed Nintendo that fans are eager for more Metroid. Axiom Verge borrows a lot of the atmosphere of Nintendo's once proud series, so there is certainly a connection to be made between the two.

It's wild to think that in 2021, we'll not only be getting the next Axiom Verge title, but also a brand new Metroid game. Switch owners are certainly ending the year with a bang in terms of software.
