Battlefield 2042 Announced, Launches October 22

0

EA and DICE have, at long last, officially unveiled Battlefield 2042, following a bevy of leaks. The game’s announce trailer is roughly five minutes long, showing in-engine footage. The trailer confirms a near-future setting for the game (though the name gives that away, obviously), and also showcases several new mechanics, such as wingsuits, large-scale weather mechanics such as a massive tornado, and more. Several locations, presumably the in-game maps, are shown off, while plenty of vehicular action is also on display. Take a look below.

The official Battlefield site also reveals crucial new details on the game, including on the game’s setting and story. In Battlefield 2042’s near-future setting, a climate crisis has brought the world to the bring, leading to collapsing nations and crumbling economies. In the wake of all this, the “displaced” have banded together, and pledging allegiance to no nation, fight only for themselves, and each other. They’re called Non-Patriated, or No-Pats. Open war is “imminent” as Russia and US fight over food and fuel shortages, and No-Pats have to pick sides.

And how about the multiplayer side of things? As explained on the game’s official Origin page (and leaked earlier today), Battlefield 2042 will launch with 7 maps that will support up to 128 players in 64 vs 64 battles, though the game’s PS4 and Xbox One versions will only support 64 players in 32 vs 32 battles. Weapons, gadgets, and vehicles can be customized within battles themselves, and you can use a grapple hook, a wingsuit, and even summon a robotic dog to fight by your side.

Fan-favourite modes Conquest and Breakthrough are returning, while a new mode, Hazard Zone, is also confirmed, which is described as “an all-new high-stakes multiplayer experience.” Squads are also going to be big in Battlefield 2042, especially with the new Specialists system. Specialists are based on Battlefield’s four classes, with each having a unique Specialty and Trait, and being fully customizable beyond that. These specialists are Webster Macay, Maria Falck, Pyotr “Boris” Guskovsky, and Wikus “Casper” Van Daele.

Battlefield 2042 is launching on October 22 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. More gameplay details are coming soon, with a gameplay reveal set for June 13. Stay tuned for more details.
