This list covers some of the best mounts in the game, as well as when you should be looking for them. Some mounts are available during pre-Hardmode, others can only be found in Master mode. Here's everything you need to know about the best mounts in Terraria.

Best Pre-Hardmode Mounts In Terraria 1.4

There are some brand new additions to the pre-Hardmode mounts in Terraria 1.4. Even with the shiny new mounts, sometimes it's a good idea to head back a couple of years and pick up an old, reliable mount.

Bee – Honeyed Goggles

The Bee was introduced way back in Terraria 1.2 (that's 2013, by the way) but is still one of the best early game mounts in the game. Getting the Honeyed Goggles is one of the main reasons why you should fight the Queen Bee, probably multiple times until you get it to drop.

Lava Shark – Superheated Blood

Introduced with the 1.4 Journey's End update, the Lava Shark is a Hellstone-miners dream. When you ride it you can swim in lava, and you won't take damage. If you're finding the grind for Molten Armor and tools a bit of a nightmare, the Lava Shark is the mount for you.

Other Mounts In Pre-Hardmode

Here are the other mounts in pre-Hardmode Terraria.

Best Mounts In Hardmode Terraria 1.4

Hardmode has plenty of unique mounts that all have their uses. From the Unicorn, one of the easiest to get, to the all-powerful Drill Containment Unit, here's what you need to know about the best mounts in Hardmode.

Unicorn – Blessed Apple

The Unicorn is one of the fastest mounts in Hardmode and also one of the easiest to acquire. You just need to farm Unicorns in the Hallowed biome that spawns on your world.

Winged Slime – Gelatinous Pillion

Dropped by the Queen Slime, the Winged Slime is one of the best boss-fighting mounts in Hardmode thanks to its maneuverability and the Summon damage it can do. A good mount for a Summoner build.

UFO – Cosmic Car Key

The UFO is a slow-moving but mobile mount that is ideal for building. We wouldn't recommend using it for a big boss fight (the Slime or Witch's Broom is better for that) but it can be useful for adding finishing touches to your megabase.

Witch's Broom

This Expert-only mount is one of the best in Hardmode thanks to its ability to fly infinitely. It's marginally better than the UFO, mostly because it can travel through liquids and has a smaller hitbox (so you can travel through smaller spaces without getting off the mount.)

Drill – Drill Containment Unit

The Drill is one of the most difficult items to craft in all of Terraria, requiring 160 Luminite, 600 Chlorophyte Or, as well as 600 Glowing Mushrooms. And that's just the start. It's worth it though: this infinite-flight mount is the fastest method of mining blocks in the entire game.
