Black Canary From Birds Of Prey Is Getting A Spin-Off Movie On HBO Max

Black Canary is getting her own spin-off movie on HBO Max, as revealed by lead actress Jurnee Smollett. The film will depict the iteration of Black Canary we first saw in the 2020 film, Birds of Prey, which followed the character as she fought alongside Harley Quinn.

The film will reportedly be written by Misha Green, who is best known for her work as the showrunner for Lovecraft Country, as well as producing 2017's Get Out.

The ending of Birds of Prey saw Black Canary partner up with Renee Montoya and Huntress to form the titular vigilante gang. Details are scarce on the Black Canary spin-off, so it is unknown if we will see what happened after these events, or if it will instead serve as a prequel. In any event, the project appears to be a long way away from release.

Any kind of Birds of Prey sequel was up in the air for some time, as much like The Suicide Squad, it had a disappointing run at the box office despite its positive critical reception (but they're both really bloody good, so let's ignore that).

Speaking of The Suicide Squad, director James Gunn recently revealed an unexpected source of inspiration that helped during the making of the film. Gunn says that Harley Quinn's ultraviolent escape from captivity was based on the 2012 hack-and-slash game, Lollipop Chainsaw.

"I always loved the way that the hearts and beautiful little things came out of people mixed with blood," Gunn explained in an interview. "So, a lot of it goes back to that, the aesthetic of mixing this horrible gore with Harley's starry-eyed way of looking at life and creating Harley-vision basically. So that was something that came on very early. It was in the first draft of the script."

Incidentally, Gunn actually worked on the script for Lollipop Chainsaw, pre-Guardians of the Galaxy fame. Despite the game itself being met with mixed reviews, the story's humour was praised by critics.
