Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was officially revealed today through a Call of Duty: Warzone event that concluded with Cold War’s reveal trailer. Since the in-game event, a flurry of news and confirmations surrounding Black Ops Cold War has flooded the internet. While most of the news is straight forward or confirms leaks surrounding the game, some of the details regarding next-generation upgrades have fans scratching their heads.

In the mix of all the details surrounding Black Ops Cold War, Activision confirmed that the game will continue the include cross-play across all consoles. This, of course, means that players on Xbox One will be able to play with anyone on the PlayStation 4 or PC, and will even include playing against players on the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5.

Along with this confirmation, Black Ops Cold War will feature cross-progression, allowing players to take their unlocks and loadouts to any platform which is especially good for anyone upgrading to next-gen hardware. However, there is a catch to upgrading physical current-gen copies of the game that leaves Xbox One players at a disadvantage.

Fans upgrading to the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 have an easy way to enjoy Black Ops Cold War. Players will simply need to buy at least the higher-priced Cross-Gen Bundle that will give them access to the game on both current and next-gen consoles.

Additionally, the standard physical edition of Black Ops Cold War on PlayStation 4 can be inserted and played on a non-digital PlayStation 5 and be upgraded to a PlayStation 5 version through the PlayStation Store. Players on the Xbox One, however, will not have this option to upgrade, and will need to buy a specific Xbox Series X version of the game (Cross-Gen Bundle or Ultimate Edition) to enjoy the next-generation enhancements, which costs $10 more.

Xbox One fans should just look to buy the $69.99 Cross-Gen Bundle of Black Ops Cold War to have their bases covered. It seems like the standard physical edition of the game could leave players with quite a headache if they attempt to upgrade to next-gen consoles.

Cold War’s confusing structure isn’t alone. Recently, Control came under fire for announcing an Ultimate Edition of the game that would allow players to upgrade to next-gen consoles, however, fans who already own a copy Control have to re-buy the game’s Ulitmate Edition to get the free upgrade to the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be released on November 13 for PS4, Xbox, and PC with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
