Blood Bowl, the fantasy sports tabletop game that takes place in the Warhammer universe, is getting another video game release. This version, titled Blood Bowl 3, announced itself with a brand new trailer released at this year’s Gamescom.

Blood Bowl is a spin-off of the brutal Warhammer universe (not to be confused with the sci-fi version Warhammer 40K,) a fantasy universe based around a variety of tabletop and role-playing games. The universe of Blood Bowl is a good deal more lighthearted than Warhammer usually is, as the people of the Blood Bowl universe take part in a brutal yet highly entertaining combat ritual instead of the usual wars that plague the world of Warhammer. Of course, given that the game is based on American Football, there’s still plenty of deaths and horrible injuries.

The cinematic trailer for Blood Bowl 3 doesn’t give much in the way of concrete details, but it does show off a variety of the team types long-time fans may recognize. There are some of the classic teams, such as bashy orcs, the well-balanced humans, and the agile wood elves. Not to mention some of the more bizarre teams, like the teams themed around the Chaos gods, whose players can develop special abilities based around physical mutations like tentacles and extra heads.

According to IGN, Blood Bowl 3 will be using the rules from the newest edition, which will arrive later this year, and feature new teams such as the Black Orcs and Imperial Nobility. When the game does release, it’ll start out with a dozen teams, along with their own arenas and cheerleaders, with more teams and features arriving via post-launch content. If you’re looking for other Warhammer games while Blood Bowl 3 is in development, the Total War series’ foray into the Warhammer universe is another solid choice.

Meanwhile, the tabletop version of Blood Bowl is also getting new features. Last week, the game introduced a team focused around snotlings, the annoying little brother of the other green skin races. Blood Bowl 2 players may recognize them from the Ogres team, where they act as the quicker, more fragile counterpart to the brutish but dumb ogres.

Blood Bowl 3 will release early 2021 for the Nintendo Switch, PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
