Breath of the Wild Mod Adds Ray Tracing to Make Hyrule More Stunning Than Ever

Breath of the Wild 2 Has Nothing On This

Can you believe it’s already been four years since The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the World came out for Nintendo Switch? That’s a lot of time for a video game, so it’s no wonder that Breath of the Wild, despite still being very fun, has begun to show its age.

However, Germany-based modder Digital Dreams has found a way to get around these limitations–by boosting the game to 8K resolution and adding an incredible ray tracing reshade. The result is a game that’s more lush, vibrant, and alive than ever, which is extra impressive considering we’re talking about Breath of the Wild here. If you don’t believe us, take a look at the modder’s latest showcase, a nine-minute-long video dedicated to the results of their efforts.

The video shows off what the forests of Hyrule look like with sunlight filtering down through the canopies and what the hills look like glittering at sunset. Light glimmers on individual stalks of grass during the day and even at night, it’s clear that a lot of extra depth has been added to the environments.

Lightning strikes brighten up the whole sky, beaches look so real you could almost reach out and touch them, and buildings and torches shine vibrantly against the natural backdrop. Plus, splashing around in marshy ponds has never looked so fun.

Of course, to get this kind of performance you need to have a pretty amazing PC set-up–you need an Asus TUF RTX 3090, 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of SSD storage, among other things, as well as Digital Dreams’ ray tracing reshade presets. However, the results speak for themselves.

We’ll be very surprised if Breath of the Wild 2 can compete with this mod on a purely visual level when it finally comes out. Either way, this shows that Breath of the Wild has a lot of potential as a PC game.
