Bungie Dev Hints At Legendary Trace Rifles, Repeaters Coming To Destiny 2

Destiny 2’s director and general manager have been doing the rounds since the big Witch Queen presentation last month. We've already found out more about how weapon crafting will work in The Witch Queen, how the 30th-anniversary event will be a "shotgun blast" of content, and that Nova Warp won't be going anywhere when the Void 3.0 subclass rework arrives with the upcoming expansion.

And now, thanks to the latest interview between game director Joe Blackburn and Polygon, we're getting big hints that there might be two new classes of Legendary weapons added in the not-so-distant future: Trace Rifles and lever-action repeaters.

“Dead Man’s Tale is pretty cool, right,” Blackburn told Polygon. “Coldheart is pretty cool. These are all stuff that we look at in the future and say, yeah, we’re as excited as the community is about a bunch of that.”

Blackburn noted that the Destiny 2 team still wants to ensure that certain Exotics remain "unique," but also noted that certain weapon archetypes started out as Exotics before eventually gaining Legendary versions.

“You can look back at our track record here, and you can say things like ‘Hey, I remember when swords were just Exotic,’ right? ‘Hey, I remember when there was only one sidearm in the game.’ This is something that as we explore, we’re really excited about pushing some of those.”

With four Exotic Trace Rifles already and fans begging for Legendary versions for years, the time seems perfect for a set of Legendary Trace Rifles. Blackburn didn’t provide a time frame, a new expansion is a pretty good time to introduce a new weapon archetype.

In the same interview, Blackburn also discussed the problem with certain Exotics receiving Catalysts while others have to make do without the benefit of Power Orbs. No hints at a solution were provided, but the dev team is working on giving un-Catalyzed Exotics a leg-up.
