Call of Duty games have always been extremely competitive. From GameBattles matches in the Call of Duty 4 days to the Call of Duty League (CDL), players love to team up, show up, and show out against top-notch competitors.

As the 2020 CDL comes to a close, and the winners of the Modern Warfare tournament walk away with thrones as awards,  the official Twitter page of the league informed fans about a couple of changes for next season, and it’s going to shake things up drastically.

The very short teaser video from the CDL Twitter page hinted at two big pieces of news. For one thing, Season 2 is going to take place within the newly revealed Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. This certainly shouldn’t be a shock. Black Ops Cold War is being developed by Treyarch and is being released this fall. It’s no surprise that the next season will transition to the next Call of Duty title. The more intriguing news is that it will change from 5v5 to 4v4.

While each new Call of Duty game comes with its own unique twists in gameplay, weaponry, perks, and more, the 5v5 set up has become somewhat of a standard for competitive play. But with season 2 of CDL, the count is dropping to 4v4 action. This means that the weakest link on each team is going to have to be dropped, which could be a devastating fight within each squad. Tough decisions need to be made sometimes, like Minnesota ROKKR recently benching a player before the CDL playoffs, but now even more cuts from the starting lineup will need to be made.

The multiplayer for Black Ops Cold War will be revealed on September 9, so the professional teams don’t know anything about the game yet. It could be that Black Ops Cold War is specifically designed with 4v4 in mind. Maybe the standard multiplayer experience will be smaller and more intimate in scale, with larger battles taking place within big team modes and battle royale. Everyone is set to get more information in just a few days.

The move to Black Ops Cold War makes sense, as every new season will most likely take place on the newest COD. But the change to 4v4 is one that teams will need to get used to. Shaking up the experience is a good way for CDL to stay fresh and among the best esports tournaments.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches November 13 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
