CD Projekt Red Acquires Canadian Studio, Digital Scapes

CD Projekt Red has formally announced the acquisition of Canadian based developer, Digital Scapes. The two companies have collaborated since 2018, and signed the acquisition deal back in March 2021.

Digital Scapes might not be a well-known developer in its own right, but did however assist CDPR with Cyberpunk 2077. According to a press release announcing the deal to the public, Digital Scapes helped with the game's optimization for three years.

Digital Scape's impressive resume doesn't end there. The company itself was formed in 2012 by industry veterans, hailing from BioWare, Radical Entertainment, and Relic. Since its formation, it has worked on franchises such as Dying Light, Company of Heroes, Dead Rising and Mass Effect.

The Canada-based studio specializes in assisting other developers in various areas, such as multiplayer, animation, combat design, cloud services, and much more. While the press release is vague on what Digital Scape's will be up to over at CD Projekt Red, it's suggesting it will continue in this supporting role, rather than helm a new project anytime soon.

This acquisition may also reignite hope for Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer, since the company has experience in this field. In March – the same time as the acquisition – it was announced that the originally planned multiplayer mode was scrapped, and would instead aim to "enhance single-player games with online experiences.” With that change in strategy coinciding with the acquisition, it's likely the two are linked.
