Flawless Victory

The new Mortal Kombat movie may not have been the groundbreaking cinematic experience for everyone, but aims to please the fans that took the franchise from its humble beginnings to where it stands today. It has the hyper violent fights, over the top action, and one-liners directly from the games.

It also took a great care in adapting the characters. Warner Bros recently released a behind the scenes featurette for the 2021 film that goes into the costume design, the action and where the inspiration came from, as well as stories from the cast of their first experience with Mortal Kombat games.

This video is something that you would have seen on the special features of a DVD or Blu-Ray, but I guess because of the digital nature of the film’s release, it was made available sooner.

Obviously, a lot of things in the film are made with CGI, but like any good production company, the filmmakers did as many practical effects as they could. An entire warehouse was used for making practical ice effects for Sub-Zero’s scenes. A lot of set pieces in his lair where he fights Cole are dipped in liquid prop glass, so they can shatter when they are hit.

Classic characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Shang Tsung appear in the movie. Since they make so many appearances in the games, costume designer Cappi Ireland shows us where the influences from their armor come from and little details in their costumes.

If you have not yet seen Mortal Kombat, there are several scenes that may spoil some things, but may also give you more reason to check it out. Mortal Kombat is in theaters and on HBO Max.
