Chicory: A Colorful Tale – How to Create Custom Color Palettes

Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a laid-back game about creativity. Directed by Wandersong's Greg Lobanov, players enter a storybook world where a mysterious occurrence has drained the world of all color and have to paint it back in themselves with a magic brush, helping the food-named animal denizens along the way.

The game gives players plenty of room to express themselves. They unlock more brush patterns and decorations to spruce up every part of Chicory's map on their journey. But it's not complete freedom.

In Chicory: A Colorful Tale, every area has a set color palette of four colors, but this isn't as big a problem as one might think. It gives every area character, makes color-switching simple, and allows Chicory to accommodate colorblind players better.

Still, some players may find this stifling. Thankfully, there's a way around this. Players can create custom color palettes that can be used on every screen. But the quest that allows this is well hidden.

Throughout the game, players will come across several NPC's who mention the genius color researcher, Dr. Cheese. She's who they'll need to seek out, but she's only accessible near the end of the game.

There are two prerequisites to finding Dr. Cheese's lab. First, players need to be able to swim through water. Second, they need access to the Brekkie, the beach town near the top right corner of the map. Both of these things should be available after chapter 6.

Players need to fill the coastline with color and then swim north. Immediately behind the town is an area with a waterway to the north and cliffs to the west. Climbing those cliffs will lead to Dr. Cheese's lab.

Dr. Cheese will ask the player if they want to help her with an experiment to make custom colors. If they agree, she opens a menu where players can fill 8 different spots with colors chosen from a color wheel and light slider. These are the colors for the custom palette.

After filling the tabs, this color set becomes available as a brush style, and players can equip it any time from the menu. Combined with an area's standard palette, the player now has 12 colors to choose from on each screen.

That being said, if a player wants to change the 8 colors of their palette, they have to return to Dr. Cheese's lab. Players should take advantage of Chicory's fast travel system, unlocked in the city of Dinners.

Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a game full of charm and laden with secrets, and custom colors are a great reward for players who stick with it to the end.

Chicory: A Colorful Tale is out now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
