Co Op Cobra Kai Video Game Revealed For Multiple Platforms

Fans of The Karate Kid movies, and the subsequent Netflix series featuring its antagonist Sensei Daniel LaRusso, are getting a brand new street fighting game in the form of Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues. It releases on October 27, 2020.

“Strike first, strike hard, no mercy.” That is the mantra of the Cobra Kai dojo. It is the antithesis to Sensei Miyagi’s zen “Wax on, wax off,” approach. GameMill Entertainment has set out to craft a brand new storyline in the form of 28 story missions featuring both these dojos, and players will have to complete both sides of the story before they can unlock the ultimate ending.

The game itself, which will be available for Switch, PS4, and Xbox One, closely resembles the play style of iconic beat-em-up games like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage. The player will be able to switch freely between 8 characters from Cobra Kai including Johhny and Daniel. The game can be played either single-player or couch co-op.

GameMill has a history of creating games based on TV and movies, including Nickelodeon Kart Racers, Cartoon Network Battle Crashers, American Ninja Warrior Challenge, and Zombieland: Double Tap Road Trip. Reviews of previous games via Metacritic and Steam indicate a hit-or-miss history, so the quality of this release is really in the hands of the current team of developers.

Critiques of the trailer are already starting to pop up. Players hope that the gameplay footage interspersed between shots lifted from the real Karate Kid movies and the Cobra Kai Netflix series is not what the final game will look like. The animation could be tighter, and there is always a concern that the impact of the 2020 pandemic on voice acting (as evidenced by the upcoming Guild Wars 2 DLC) could mean a lot of recycled lines from the original live-action media.

Fans who are looking forward to the game anticipate a campy adventure where they will show no mercy.

Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues will be released on October 27th for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
