Cyberpunk 2077 Update 1.3 Still Has NPC Clones Everywhere

The action roleplaying game Cyberpunk 2077 has had its share of bugs and technical issues, and CD Projekt Red has released a total of eight hotfixes and patches since the game launched in December 2020. The Cyberpunk 2077 development team put a lot of effort into Patch 1.3, which released on August 17, adding in a few free DLCs along with a plethora of game tweaks. Nevertheless, some of the issues that should have been fixed are still present after the patch, and some new ones have also made an appearance.

After Patch 1.3, NPCs now correctly hold the steering wheel in cars. However, a recent Reddit post shows a car in Cyberpunk 2077 suddenly popping into existence directly on top of another vehicle. A different video shared on Reddit showcases an odd issue with the player character's shadow while swimming. Although the character itself appears fine, the shadow’s arms warp into long and distorted appendages reminiscent of The Thing.

NPC clones are another issue that has existed since the game's launch, with many players sharing videos and images of multiples of the same NPC model appearing onscreen. Patch 1.23 for Cyberpunk 2077, which was released in June, was supposed to improve memory issues and therefore result in fewer identical NPCs spawning at once. However, players have continued to report the issue even after the release of Patch 1.3.

Given the number of NPCs that populate many areas of Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City, it’s understandable to occasionally encounter duplicates, and CD Projekt Red isn’t the first game studio to reuse character models in this way. However, according to some players, the high number of clones that regularly appear onscreen can break their immersion in the game world and even be a little unsettling.

Despite the ongoing and newly introduced technical issues players have experienced with Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red has made a number of noticeable improvements to the game since launch, some of which were major sticking points for gamers. Initially, if a save file’s size exceeded 8 MB, players would receive an error message that their save could not be loaded. This file size cap was removed with a hotfix. The game generally experiences fewer crashes than just a few months ago, broken side quests have been fixed, and V now sleeps in a more realistic position.

Optimization of the game for last-generation consoles, which had the greatest number of bugs and performance problems, has been a priority for CD Projekt Red. The fact that Cyberpunk 2077 can again be purchased from the PlayStation Store after six months’ absence is testament to the improvements made to the game since December, although Sony warned purchasers about playing it on the base PS4.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions currently in development.
