Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3 PS5 and Xbox Series X Versions May Not Release in 2021 After All

Although it seems the tides are slowly turning for CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, there is still a long way to go before many consider it fully “redeemed” from its launch in 2020. CD Projekt Red has released a ton of bug fixes, updates, and more, with Cyberpunk 2077’s 1.3 update receiving a mostly warm welcome.

However, many are still wanting to see what comes next and how future updates, DLC, expansions, and more impact the game. Indeed, perhaps one of the most eyed updates for the game come in its PS5 and Xbox Series X versions. CD Projekt Red has previously indicated that Cyberpunk 2077 would receive PS5 and Xbox Series X updates by the end of the year, as well as The Witcher 3. But that may no longer be the case.

In its latest shareholders call (as transcribed by VGC), CD Projekt RED SVP of business development Michal Nowakowski said that the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of both games could miss their targeted release dates, that being by the end of 2021. Nowakowski emphasizes that the target is still this year, but that “keeping in mind the lessons [CD Projekt RED] learned during the past year…[the company] can’t say with full certainty that the production schedule will not change.”

Nowakowski also emphasizes the differences in development on The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077’s PS5 and Xbox Series X versions, as the latter is being worked on by over a third of the company (as well as its updates.) Meanwhile, The Witcher 3 is being worked on by an external team at Saber Interactive, which previously worked with CD Projekt Red on The Witcher 3’s Switch port. Nowakowski, nonetheless, would not guarantee that either release by the end of the year despite that being the goal.

For many fans, this may be a slightly double-edged sword. Many are looking forward to these upgrades to play through The Witcher 3 all over again and perhaps give Cyberpunk 2077 a second chance. At the same time, CD Projekt Red is clearly aware that both games, but perhaps more so Cyberpunk 2077, need to nail these PS5 and Xbox Series X launches. As such, it is good to hear that it will delay if it needs to.

Joint CEO Adam Kicinski believes that “the next-gen version is an important step on our adventure in the Cyberpunk universe” and the company overall sees the strong long-term potential of the IP. He also confirmed that CD Projekt Red is working on Cyberpunk 2077’s first major expansion as part of that, but couldn’t say anything more at the time. Either way, getting the next step in Cyberpunk’s story just right is clearly important to the company, and doing what is best for the next-gen versions is a priority, whatever that may be.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are in development.
