Destiny 2: New Witch Queen Teaser Confirms a Big Leak

Some games, especially MMOs or other inherently massive titles, have the tendency of becoming easy targets for dataminers. Hidden game files often contain information about the future of the game. However, Destiny 2's leaks seem to be much more malicious than a few excited dataminers, and that's because of how many leaks in the past few months that have turned out to be credible. Today, Bungie tweeted a teaser trailer for Destiny 2's The Witch Queen expansion where players get to see Savathun for the very first time in her true form, entering deep waters where many corpses of drowned Hive are floating.

Though players don't actually see Savathun's face, what is shown of her regalia and body is enough to make the connection to one of those aforementioned leaks, potentially confirming part of it. What is shown is very reminiscent of Savathun's leaked image for The Witch Queen, which was an upscaled version of what looked like early concept art for the next big expansion of Destiny 2. Many players thought the image was a fake, as it depicted the Hive God with a Ghost just above her shoulder, and the reasoning was that there was no way Savathun would ever get the Traveler's Light for herself.

Savathun's Appearance and Alleged Destiny 2 Leaks

What made the image seem fake was that it was all blurred, presumably due to the AI upscaling process it had gone through. Some fans were quick to find common ground between the leak and official images for the past few Seasons in Destiny 2. All the images for Season of the Hunt, Season of the Chosen, and Season of the Splicer had a similar aesthetic, with the main characters involved at the image's center and a few key colors associated with the Season present in the image. The alleged leaked image of Savathun for The Witch Queen expansion has the exact same design as those of the past three Seasons, providing the leak with some credibility.

There was also an alleged leak that was supposed to be the extended version of the original "notepad leak" that correctly predicted a lot of what happened in the past two Seasons, and also the name for Season 15. The extended version mentioned how Savathun would get the Traveler's Light for herself, and presumably some of the Hive as well. Many players think the leak bears little to no credibility because of a few key factors, but it was also the first mention of Savathun getting a Ghost in The Witch Queen expansion.

Now, Bungie's latest tweet alludes to the possibility that all of that will come true when The Witch Queen comes in February 2022. It's likely that this will be revealed tomorrow during Bungie's showcase of the expansion before Season of the Lost launches. The implications of Savathun getting a Ghost and the Light are many, and there could be branching consequences in Destiny 2's universe if this is the case when the expansion drops.

It also has a common theme with both Season of the Chosen and Season of the Splicer, where long-time enemies in the form of the Cabal and Eliksni turned out to be potential allies in the war to come — the one against the Darkness. Could Savathun be an ally as well, after all? This remains to be seen, and the fact that Savathun's appearance is the same as that one leaked image does not necessarily mean that this is exactly what's going to happen, as Bungie's plan might be different.

Destiny 2 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
