Diablo 2: Resurrected is right around the corner, bringing the classic dungeon crawling hack-and-slash game to modern platforms with revamped graphics and quality of life improvements. However, it seems as though there will be one fan-requested feature that won't be in Diablo 2: Resurrected come its launch on September 23, according to Diablo franchise executive producer Rod Fergusson.
Fergusson has confirmed that Diablo 2: Resurrected will not have personal loot at launch. For those who may be unfamiliar with the term, personal loot in a dungeon crawling game like this is loot that only appears for the player. This way, everyone gets their own loot drops and they don't have to worry about fighting with their partners over loot. The original Diablo 2 did not have a personal loot system, instead opting for universal loot, and it seems the same will hold true for Resurrected – at launch, at least.

Fergusson also said that the team has discussed the possibility of the Diablo 2 remake getting personal loot at some point down the line. Whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen, but it seems like something that would be well-received by the community, as long as it was an optional feature and not something imposed on the entire experience.
Borderlands 3 is a great example of how personal loot can be done right in a video game. Gearbox Software's looter-shooter, itself heavily inspired by the Diablo franchise, lets players choose if they want to have personal loot or universal loot in their playthroughs. This way fans of both loot systems can get the kind of experience they want, either enjoying the community that can come from universal loot or being happy that they don't have to fight over loot drops.
Diablo 2 item trading is a big part of the game's social and community aspects, and there's a chance some of that could be lost if a personal loot system was widely implemented, but on the other hand, having universal loot can lead to griefers and other issues. Diablo 2 players in the past have been known to use cheats to give them an edge when it comes to collecting loot, giving them an unfair amount of loot compared to the people that they're playing with.
While a personal loot system could be added eventually, those playing Diablo 2: Resurrected at launch should know that they will be dealing with a universal loot system for the foreseeable future.
Diablo 2: Resurrected launches September 23 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
