Dune Stars Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista’s Buddy Cop Film Might Happen

It seems that a buddy cop movie starring Dune co-stars Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista may actually be in development.

Bautista had fans going crazy after the star tweeted a buddy-cop movie concept that would star himself and his See and Dune co-star, Momoa, while also being directed by John Wick and Deadpool 2's David Leitch. While appearing on The Late Late Show With James Corden, Momoa addressed the Lethal Weapon style concept, believing that the film will happen.

Momoa told Corden, “I’m not on Twitter, but he literally texted me about four days ago, going, ‘We need to do a buddy cop film. We love each other, you know, obviously we met on See, we’re on Dune together, so I said, ‘Absolutely.’ And he’s like, ‘Let’s do it in Hawaii.’ I’m like, ‘Let’s do it.’ I’m like, ‘I got an idea.’ So it’s off to the races now. We’re doing it.” Corden, with a big grin spread across his face, was amazed at how simple it was to pitch an idea and then start rolling with it. Momoa added, "It sells itself, bro. Dave loves wearing Speedos. I love wearing board shorts. And both of us with our shirts off. He’ll be grumpy and I’ll be charming. Boom. It sells itself, bro. I have the hair. He doesn’t have hair. We cover all the demographics.” Although nothing is confirmed 100%, it seems very likely that this film idea would gain enough traction to begin development, especially looking at the two leads who would star in it.

Bautista, who started as a professional wrestler early in his career, has transitioned to Hollywood stardom, starring in films like Guardians of the Galaxy, Spectre, Blade Runner 2049, and now the upcoming Dune and Knives Out 2. Momoa, too, has made a big name for himself, rising to fame through Game of Thrones as Khal Drogo, starring in Conan the Barbarian reboot, and now known for playing the iconic superhero Aquaman. Although the buddy-cop genre has been around for quite some time, with each one tending to follow the same exact tropes, both the on-screen presence of the two actors and the chemistry that they have built working together would surely create an exciting, hilarious, and successful blockbuster.

On top of that, a director like Leitch, who started out as a stunt-double for big names like Brad Pitt (who will star in Leitch's upcoming action-thriller Bullet Train) and Jean-Claude Van Damme, has plenty of experience for creating some of the best action sequences that rely heavily on real stunts (Atomic Blonde's one-take scene is a perfect example). Having him on board would be another reason to follow through with this concept. Whatever happens, it's evident that the fans are definitely behind seeing a film like this come to life on the big screen.

In the meantime, fans can catch Bautista and Momoa in the thrilling 2nd season of See, which will premiere on Apple TV Plus on August 27, 2021. Meanwhile, Momoa is currently filming Aquaman 2 for Warner Bros. and DC.

Dune is scheduled to be released in theaters and on HBO MAX on October 22, 2021.
