Every Game By Remedy Entertainment, Ranked

The game developer Remedy Entertainment is known for its games that feature rich storytelling and innovative gameplay and mechanics.

Although Remedy has currently only released nine games since its formation in 1995, some of them have been amongst the greatest story-driven games ever. Here we take a look at all nine games and rank them from worst to best.

Agents Of Storm

Agents of Storm was a freemium mobile game that was released on iOS in 2014. The game was similar to other freemium games like Clash of Clans.

Agents of Storm was supposed to get an Android release after the iOS launch, but this never happened as it was a critical failure, with many saying it wasn’t any different from other games of that style. It relied heavily on microtransactions and didn’t offer much entertainment. In 2017 the game was shut down just before its third year.

Death Rally Remake

The remake of Death Rally takes the classic vehicular combat racing game and gives it a fresh coat of paint.

Death Rally has you racing around tracks in cars that have been equipped with weapons that you use to eliminate other racers. The remake was first released for mobile in 2011 before coming to PC in 2012. The mobile ports were generally well-received, whereas the PC version had a more negative reception. Although the remake is fairly similar to the original game, some felt that the small changes made to the game were for the worse.

Death Rally (1996)

The original Death Rally from 1996 is a fun and chaotic game that still holds up 25 years after its release.

It's also a better game than its remake. It came out the year after Twisted Metal and the year before Carmageddon when vehicular combat was a hot item. The game can still easily be enjoyed today with ease thanks to Remedy porting it to Windows and releasing it as freeware in 2009, allowing you to experience the game in its original and unaltered state as you please.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is a follow-up to the horror action-adventure game Alan Wake. Alan Wake’s American Nightmare plays similarly to the previous entry in the series but has a tonal shift in the narrative. Alan Wake focused on horror elements and the sense of isolation, whereas the follow-up is more lighthearted and has more dark comedy.

The game continues the story of the fiction author who has to defeat an evil doppelgänger of himself that was created by the evil powers of the first game. American Nightmare is great for fans of the original game who want some additional content.

Quantum Break

The 2016 sci-fi game Quantum Break is a third-person action-adventure game that blends television and gaming into one experience. It centers around the character Jack Joyce, who can manipulate time after a failed attempt at time travel.

The game was a commercial and critical success and was the best-selling new intellectual property published by Microsoft since the launch of Xbox One until the release of Sea of Thieves. The gameplay and story were well received, although opinions were mixed on the quality of the television segments.

Control

Control is a game that is part X-Files and part Twin Peaks, with clear inspirations from the SCP Foundation. It has you exploring a building called The Oldest House — the headquarters for a secret government agency that observes abnormal and supernatural objects and entities.

The plot of the game pulls you in from the start, with the strange and unexplained events you experience. Although not necessarily a horror game, Control does have horror elements and oozes an atmosphere that immerses you into a world full of mystery and intrigue.

Alan Wake

Alan Wake is a third-person survival horror game that has you playing as the titular character, who is an author of crime novels. It's a great survival horror game with a gripping story in which you question your own sanity as a series of supernatural events take place. All the while, you're trying to find your wife.

The game stands out from other titles in the genre as you must use a flashlight to make the shadowy enemies vulnerable before you can finish them off with your weapons. The flashlight adds another thing for you to manage and preserve besides ammunition, as it requires batteries. Fans of survival horror owe it to themselves to play this game.

Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne

The second installment in the Max Payne series was the last Max Payne game developed by Remedy, with the third being handed over to Rockstar.

Max Payne 2 continues the dark neo-noir story of the first entry and, of course, sees the return of bullet time. Max Payne 2 was critically well-received with minor criticisms being placed on its short duration. Unfortunately, the positive critical consensus didn’t translate into sales, and it sold poorly. However, the game stands the test of time and even now still provides one of the best experiences in gaming.

Max Payne

The first Max Payne is a game that changed the gaming industry forever upon its release, with innovative mechanics and an extremely dark story.

Max Payne is credited as being the first game to truly implement bullet time, a mechanic that slows down time, giving you more time to react. Variations of the bullet time feature have appeared in games such as the F.E.A.R. and Red Dead series. The mechanic transformed the game completely, allowing you to slow down time as you dive through the air firing your guns like the star in an action film. Max Payne was a game that made a huge impact on games that is still felt today.
