F1 2021’s Latest Update Disables PS5 Ray-Tracing

Codemasters has temporarily disabled ray-tracing in F1 2021 on PS5 due to performance issues it was causing. The feature remains in place on Xbox Series X and PC.

Formula One made its first foray onto new-gen consoles last week via the launch of F1 2021. Codemasters' F1 games have been stunning for a while, however, with ray-tracing and more powerful consoles at its disposal the series has never looked so good. Except for right now on PS5 as the game's first major patch has resulted in ray-tracing being disabled on the console's version of F1 2021.

The patch notes for F1 2021's 1.04 update read, “we have taken the difficult decision to temporarily disable it to aid stability. We aim to re-enable this as quickly as possible.” A performance issue with the PS5 version of the game had been highlighted during its launch weekend. Codemasters identified ray-tracing being the root of that issue.

Ray-tracing remains in place on PC and Xbox Series X. However, there has been one other fix brought about by the update that affects the game across all platforms. Players have reported save files becoming corrupted after changing their livery. The patch now addresses this and once installed, those previously corrupted saves should return to normal.

F1 2021 did not debut at number one in the UK boxed charts, being beaten to the top spot by The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Beating FIFA in sales, even during its launch weekend, has to be considered a win for Codemasters and the F1 series, though. Unlike FIFA, F1 2021 won't be able to keep up that momentum. Even though the real F1 season is in full swing, it will be somewhat of a surprise to see F1 2021 remain in the top ten best-sellers by this time next week, let alone remain in the top two.

The future of the F1 series was something of an unknown earlier this year following EA's acquisition of Codemasters. While it was always going to continue, the price of the latest installment is considerably more in most parts of the world thanks to the change in leadership. Codemasters' CEO and CFO also left the company earlier this month, just a week before the launch of F1 2021.
