Fable: Every Secret or Mystery the Franchise Never Resolved

Fable is a series that has shared much success over the course of its lifespan with entries into both the video game and book mediums since the franchise's inception. As such, there are countless threads of lore to explore, some spanning over the course of generations within the game's timeline. Many of the characters have rich backstories that may interlace with other characters, while certain allies could secretly be harbingers of death throughout the lands of Albion. With Fable 4 set to release somewhere in the distant future, there are numerous speculations as to where the series is headed.

Because of the storytelling nature of the Fable games, the possibility that Fable 4 will feature the player taking on the role of a hero related to the previous entry protagonists is highly likely. This is because each game starts the player off as a descendant of the previous hero, though some fans think Fable 4 could be a prequel. At the end of Fable: The Journey, a recurring character related to the hero's lineage named Theresa disappears from the world, stating that a new age is upon them. This has some fans believing that Fable 4 will be a soft reboot for the series, though there are still mysteries that were left unanswered.

Long before the events in the original Fable was a man named William Black. This person is a direct ancestor to the protagonists in the Fable series and is the first recorded hero in the game's history. Arguably the most powerful hero, William Black rose to defeat the Court, a trio of powerful blade masters who originally came from the Void and made the citizens of Albion suffer from their cruelty. Eventually, William did defeat the Court with the help of a sword found in the Void and brought on a new peaceful age in Albion becoming the first Archon, king of the Old Kingdom. William's time in the Void came at a cost, afflicting him with an illness that he was partially able to remove from his body, but eventually, as his body slowly deteriorated, he disappeared.

William's disappearance combined with the lack of opposition led the Archons to become corrupt themselves, treating their people with cruelty. The last Archon created the Tattered Spire, granting the user a single limitless wish which led to the destruction of the Old Kingdom. What happened to William Black remains a mystery, however, it is assumed that he became the character known as Scythe. The player first meets Scythe in the original Fable and Scythe is believed to be referenced in Fable 2 in Rose's letter if the player chooses the Love ending, with his description matching Scythe's and how he was a king. William Black played a major role in shaping the history of Albion, and fans would no doubt appreciate learning more about him in Fable 4.

The Void is another mystery fans of the series know little of. It's where the Knight, Queen, and Jack of Blades resided before coming to Albion. Because of the Tattered Spire, a rift was created between Albion and the Void, allowing the Corruptor to venture through. In its attempt to Conquer Albion, the Corrupter was stopped by three heroes who defeated it at the cost of both the Tattered Spire and the Old Kingdom. Fable 2 saw the reconstruction of the Spire where darkness and corruption came through the rift once again, culminating in an invasion in Fable 3 that the player is required to stop.

In Fable: The Journey the Spire is once again destroyed only this time by Theresa and the main character. Theresa is seemingly sacrificed with both her powers and the heart of the Spire being transferred to the player, resulting in the player becoming a blind Seer like Theresa was. It is during this event that the Corruptor is sent back to the Void as its effect on Albion and the creatures have dissipated. Not much is known about the Void, but as each of the antagonists of the Fable games has come from the Void, there is no doubt this place is important. It is alluded to that the Void exists in another realm outside the world of Albion though it is unconfirmed, though for fans of Fable lore it would be interesting if the Void were fleshed out more in Fable 4.

Fable is in development for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
