Fable Should Dive Into The Judges of Avo’s Tear

For all the ancient mysteries and myths that it wove into its central plot, there's also a lot of stories that Fable didn't fully explain. In a way, it makes sense. Fable takes place in a fantastical world built on countless stories of powerful people doing remarkable things. It's only natural that history would fail to preserve all of them – or at least, that not all of them would be important to the protagonist's journey. Regardless, the mountain of relatively unexplored Fable lore gives Playground Games a lot to work with when developing Fable 4. This could be the time for characters like the judges of Avo's Tear to come to the forefront.

After the end of the first Fable game, players can seek out a powerful sword called Avo's Tear. To obtain it, the protagonist has to face judgment at the hands of three deceased members of the Heroes' Guild: Solcius, Delfe, and Holdr. Not much is known about these heroes, but their role in protecting Avo's Tear and Fable's brief descriptions of them give the sense that they were truly epic figures in their times. If Playground Games decides to explore established Fable lore in more depth, it ought to bring these heroes back to the forefront and give fans a better sense of their lives.

Explaining the Judges of Avo's Tear

Fable provides at least a little bit of insight into who the guardians of Avo's Tear were in life. Solcius has the most direct connection to the sword. He was a powerful mage in the service of the Heroes' Guild when he sacrificed his life to close a magical vortex threatening to destroy Bowerstone, creating Avo's Tear in the process. Delfe was an unmatched sorceress herself, and although she started out living a villainous life, she later repented and dedicated her life to the Heroes' Guild. Holdr lived a more consistently heroic life, taming the last dragon in Albion and protecting the Southern Lands with his fellow Dragon Knights.

Oddly enough, Fable never really makes it clear why Delfe and Holdr guard Avo's Tear with Solcius, aside from the fact that they happen to be buried near Solcius. They're clearly revered figures in Albion's history, even if the game doesn't provide a wealth of details about their lives. Perhaps the shared reverence led Solcius to bring them together in death to protect Avo's Tear, though questions like these could be properly answered by Playground Games in Fable 4. If Playground decides that it wants to stick to Fable's original setting, then it'll have a long list of established characters like the judges of Avo's Tear to work with.

Incorporating Heroes in Fable 4

One particularly important reason that Playground should look at these judges is because of their place in the Fable timeline. They died long before the beginning of the first Fable game. Fable 4's reveal trailer suggests that it could be set in Albion's medieval past, rather than its industrial future, so maybe it'll be set back far enough that the judges of Avo's Tear will be alive – perhaps all at the same time. Playground could expand on or rewrite some of Solcius, Delfe, and Holdr's lore to bring them together, making Solcius' sacrifice a major plot point alongside Delfe's redemption and Holdr's mastery over the last dragon. Unifying these characters would nicely explain their role in the first Fable game.

That's not the only way Fable 4 could use these characters, though. They clearly have some influence from beyond the grave, so maybe the ghostly appartions of Solcius, Delfe, and Holdr could show up in Fable 4. That way they might serve as mentors to the protagonist, sharing ancient wisdom while revealing more details about their lives. Potential storytelling threads like this show why many Fable fans would be glad to see Playground work with the old Albion rather than reinventing it completely. There's still so much storytelling to be done about things like the judges of Avo's Tear, so the new Fable game shouldn't just leave all that behind.

Fable is in development for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
