Fable: The Life and Fate of Theresa Explained

The narrative of the Fable universe is known for its iconic characters and fantastical storytelling. It all starts when two children of a former hero and a woodsman must adapt after their village is destroyed by a tribe of bandits. The two children would be the protagonist of the original Fable, The Hero of Oakvale; and his sister Theresa, who seems to be one of the more powerful humans in the Fable canon. Through trauma and training, Theresa became capable of fighting whole squads of brigands without seeing them.

The story of Fable starts the day before Theresa's birthday when the player has to decide what they want to give their sister as a present. That night, while Theresa and her brother are playing in a field, bandits led by Jack of Blades raid their village in the hopes of finding a lost artifact. When Theresa couldn't tell Jack where her brother was because he had been teleported away, Jack mercilessly cut her eyes out with a knife before taking their mother prisoner. Theresa would crawl through the woods until she was rehabilitated by a bandit.

Theresa's Revenge

After years of learning how to fight without her eyes at Twinblade's camp, she would leave after briefly reuniting with her lost brother, unlocking a unique power within him. For a little while after, Theresa provides a few clues for her brother to find on his adventure, likely while she tries to find a way to get back at the Jack of Blades. After her brother is able to rescue their mom from prison, Theresa is captured by Maze and used in a ritual to attempt to unlock the Septimal Key.

Eventually, her brother is able to kill Jack, and has the option to kill his sister for the Sword of Aeons or to banish the sword for all eternity. It's canon that the player banishes the sword, as it's revealed in Fable: The Journey that Theresa had been traveling in the east, learning all she could. However, had the player killed her and the writers chose that ending, it's likely that the entire premise for Fable 2 would have to be completely different.

Fable 2's Theresa

At the beginning of Fable 2, Theresa scolds two children for not believing in magic and encourages them to make a wish for five gold pieces. After applying a monkey-paw twist on the wish, one of the children ends up dead. Theresa raises the second child as her mentee, teaching them the ways of the Guild and Will in order to avenge their lost sister. After that, the two work together in an attempt to find and recruit the heroes before Fairfax's forces can. While reading a book, although blind, Theresa remarks how she can see other worlds.

After finally recruiting the four heroes, Theresa gathered with them on Hero Hill before defeating Lucien using the same music box from the beginning. Once defeated, Theresa tells the heroes that she can send them anywhere from The Spire, but they have to leave it to her. The player can later visit Theresa in the DLC, where she reveals a basic setup for Fable 3. When the player leaves Theresa for the final time, it's revealed that she had sold the items to the vendor at the beginning of Fable 2, having played the player like a pawn the entire time.

Saving Albion

Theresa first shows up in Fable 3 when the player visits a realm known as "A Road to Rule," where she teaches them different abilities and skills to aid on their journey. Her primary goal is to remove Logan, the player's older brother, from the throne in order to save Albion. Little does the player know, Logan is ruling with an iron fist and profitable mindset in order to prepare for a coming war against darkness personified. After giving them a year to prepare, Theresa will tell the player how likely they are to survive the attack.

After defeating the monster, Theresa appears and gives an epilogue about the player's prior choices and their consequences. Before she leaves, she tells the player that the future will reveal itself when it's ready to do so.

Theresa is undoubtedly coursing with Will and psychic powers, but she's also fairly intelligent in her own right. Throughout her 500+ years of life, she has been the mastermind behind three world-changing plans. In the original Fable remake, it seems she was still finding her skills, whereas in the second she had gained the capability to endanger a child. One could even argue that Theresa knew one of the kids would die, and encouraged them to buy the Old World artifact anyway Whether fans agree with her methods or not, no one can disagree that Theresa gets results.

Fable is in development for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
