Facebook Shuts Down Farmville After 11 Years

Facebook and developer Zynga have announced they’re shutting down Farmville.

The wildly popular social-farming game has been running for eleven years, and is now shutting down in December of this year. The decision was made to pull the plug on the game because Adobe, Facebook, and Google are dropping support for the ancient Adobe Flash Player, which will no longer be supported by the end of the year.

Players will be able to play the original Farmville up to December 31st, after which the game will be completely shut down. Its sequel, Farmville 2: Tropic Escape and Farmville 2: Country Escape, is now available for iOS and Android devices. There’s even a third game, Farmville 3, which is currently in early access but not available to all mobile users.

“Following an incredible 11 years since its initial launch back in 2009, we are officially announcing the closure of the original FarmVille game on Facebook,” Zynga wrote on its blog. “As previously stated, Adobe will stop distributing and updating Flash Player for all web browsers, and Facebook will stop supporting Flash games on the platform completely after December 31st, 2020. FarmVille will therefore be directly affected as a result of this.”

They added, “We’re aware that many of you have been with us since the very beginning, helping to build an incredible global community of players over the years who’ve enjoyed this game just as much as we have,” Zynga wrote. “For that we say thank you.”

Farmville, as you probably have heard of it, was wildly popular years ago, with over 60 million users actively playing when it originally release in 2009 and over 80 million active monthly users in 2010. Have any of you played Farmville, or know someone that has?
