Final Fantasy 14: How To Dye Armor

Your character's armor is an important part of Final Fantasy 14, and looking your best is even more important. Whether you're matching a piece of armor to your hair color or going for an overall color scheme, you'll definitely be dying to change your armor's color as soon as possible.

Unlocking and using dyes is rather straightforward, but can be confusing to new players. Let's take a look at how to unlock dyes, and how you can use them to bring your fashion game to the next level.

How To Unlock Dyeing

To unlock access to dyes and dyeing, you will need to complete the quest 'Color Your World', which can be accepted from the NPC Sywrgeim.

  • Swyrgeim – Vesper Bay, Western Thanalan (x:12, y:14)

To complete this quest, you will need to bring her Orange Juice, which can be purchased from Katherine in Ul'dah (x:13.8, y:9.8), or from another player on the Market Board.

After delivering the Orange Juice, you will be able to change the color of any dyeable equipment.

To change the color of your gear, you will need items called Dyes. Each time you change the color of something, you will use up a Dye item. Additionally, to remove a Dye from an item, you will need a different item called Terebinth.

Where To Get Dyes

Dyes of all colors can be found all over Eorzea. If you're looking for some basic colors, you can buy the following dyes from NPCs for a small amount of gil.

  • Nanabe – Sapphire Avenue Exchange, Ul'dah (x:14.2, y:11.0)
  • Unsynrael – Hawkers' Alley, Limsa Lominsa (x:6.0, y:12.2)
  • Alaric – Ebony Stalls, Old Gridania (x:14.3, y:8.7)

Additionally, you can craft a few Dyes as certain crafting classes when you reach level 30. You can craft dyes as a Carpenter, Blacksmith, Armorer, and Goldsmith. To craft dyes, you will need a pigment of the corresponding color, which you can collect as a Miner or Botanist in specific areas.

The most common way of collecting dyes is to purchase them from other players through the Market Board. Basic colors aren't too expensive, but higher-end hues will have you shelling out your gil. Before you buy on the Market Board, make sure you can't get the Dye in a cheaper way, like from an NPC.

How To Dye Your Armor

In order to dye your gear, you will first have to check if it can be dyed. On the item you want to dye, check the top right corner for a small colored circle. If this icon is present, that means the item can be dyed. If there is no circle, you'll have to keep the item's color as is.

Note that if the equipment has a Glamour applied to it, the icon will be a plus symbol, rather than a circle.

From there, selecting the Dye option will bring you to the Dying window. Here, you can preview what the item will look like in any color you select, which is useful for choosing a color before making any commitments. Although you can see every color in the game in the preview window, you can only use a selected color if you have that Dye in your inventory.

After you've chosen a color, select the Dye option, and the Dye will be applied to your gear.

Now you're one step closer to becoming an Eorzea fashion icon. Or, apply your new skills to the weekly Fashion Report and start raking in the MGP.
