Final Fantasy XIV Jobs – Disciples of War, Magic, Hand & Land

Classes in Final Fantasy XIV Online are a bit complicated for newcomers, since the famous Job System is present, and the choices are just too many! Fear not though, as I’m sure that this guide to FFXIV jobs will make your early confusion go away, and let you make an educated decision for the ideal job that fits your personal playstyle!

You can think of jobs, as “class specializations”, since you will unlock most of them by hitting level 30 on a particular class – while others are unlocked through other means, explained in their relevant sections.

Once you unlock your class job, they will level up simultaneously, but your class won’t have a lot of new actions to offer from that point forward – that doesn’t mean that its existing actions are not important of course! The real power derives from the job though, since you will unlock the double amount of actions while leveling up.

Another “confusing” part is that the professions in FFXIV are also called jobs – they are the Disciples of Hand / Land, and we have also included them in this guide.

Keep in mind that one of the great things with FFXIV jobs, is that you can level all of them with the same character! Getting to max level is not easy of course, but getting a taste of each class’ core abilities is quite easy, and heavily suggested!

Disciples of War & Magic

FFXIV follows the tried & tested “trinity” system of Tank – Healer – DPS, therefore all jobs have been categorized based on that premise. DPS jobs are further split by Melee, Physical Ranged & Magical Ranged DPS, offering a wealth of choices and making it hard to stick with just one! ?

Each class / job belongs to either the Disciples of War or the Disciples of Magic (physical / magical damage), and there are also some low quality gear pieces than can be equipped by any Disciple of War / Magic class or job.

It makes more sense to categorize the jobs based on their combat role though, so here we go!

Tank

Paladin (from Gladiator)

Paladin, Moonward Fending Set w/ Aettir & Priwen Weapons, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: Gladiator (GLD)
Guild: Gladiator’s Guild in The Coliseum(X 9.2-Y 11.7), Ul’dah-Steps of Thal, Thanalan
Disciple: War
Availability: Available to new players
Job: Paladin (PLD)
Main Weapon: Swords and Shields (crafted by Blacksmiths and Armorers)
Armor: Crafted by Armorers

Pros
High Damage Mitigation
High Defense and Utilities
Easy AoE aggro (circle)
Cons
No self-sustain
Low Damage

Paladin is the fearless guardian, disciplined with the Sword and Shield, sitting in the frontline while enjoying all the attacks in its face. When it comes to raw tanking and defense this is by far the best option.

While being the most strict job defensive wise, the Paladin plays more as an off-tank, because of his long cooldowns and not having self-sustain. What he does have is crazy utility and damage mitigation to help a main-tank. It all comes down to who is more confident with the positioning and using cooldowns efficiently.

Warrior (from Marauder)

Warrior, Weathered Boii Set w/ Chango Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: Marauder (MRD)
Guild: Marauder’s Guild in Coral Tower(X 11-Y 6.3), Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks, La Noscea
Disciple: War
Availability: Available to new players
Job: Warrior (WAR)
Main Weapon: Greataxes (crafted by Blacksmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Armorers

Pros
Best Self-Sustain
Highest Damage
Low Cooldowns
Cons
Hard AoE Aggro (cone)
Low Utility

Warrior is one of a kind presence in the battlefield, wielding massive Greataxes, overwhelming any of his/her opponents.

It may seem odd being the main-tank and at the same time, for short periods, hitting the highest DPS in the party. Warrior not only can do that easily, but with massive hp pools, self-healing and short-cooldown invulnerability, it does not rely on healers that much. On the other hand, you need to attack constantly, watching your beast gauge, unleashing powerful cleaves with high potency while having every enemy’s attention.

Dark Knight

Dark Knight, Weathered Bale Set w/ Shadowbringer Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: None
NPC: Ishgardian Citizen in The Forgotten Knight inn(X 13.2-Y 8.8), The Pillars, Coerthas
Disciple: War
Availability: After you have unlocked the city of Ishgard (Complete all Main Scenario quests including ‘Before The Dawn’) and buying the Heavensward expansion
Job: Dark Knight (DRK)
Main Weapon: Greatswords (crafted by Blacksmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Armorers

Pros
Huge Damage Mitigation
High Burst Damage
Edgelord
Cons
Recource Management Heavy

Dark Knight administers justice by using his negative emotions, fueling his blood and darkside gauges and striking down foes with intimidating Greatswords.

Dark Knight sits somewhere in the middle when it comes to Tanks. He has the highest single-target damage mitigation, exceptionally good against magic, deals great burst damage and can equally off-tank and main-tank.

Gunbreaker

Gunbreaker, Allegiance Set w/ Hyperion Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: None
NPC: God’s Quiver Bow in New Gridania(X 11.5-Y 11.7), The Black Shroud
Disciple: War
Availability: After you have reached lvl60 as a Disciple of War/Magic and buying the Shadowbringers expansion
Job: Gunbreaker (GNB)
Main Weapon: Gunblades (crafted by Blacksmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Armorers

Pros
Great Damage
Fun to play
Good Mitigation
Cons
Lacks AoE

Gunbreaker splits apart from the other Tanks jobs, mainly because of it’s gameplay being identical of a DPS while having the responsibility of taking a bunch of hits and protecting the party.

The only drawback is that it lacks AoE, but in single-target,there is something very satisfying in alligning yourself, using your burst rotations and mitigating damage simultaneously.

Healer

White Mage (from Conjurer)

White Mage, Theophany Set w/ Ingrimm Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: Conjurer (CNJ)
Guild: Conjurer’s Guild in Stillglade Fane(X 6.5-Y 11), Old Gridania, The Black Shroud
Disciple: Magic
Availability: Available to new players
Job: White Mage (WHM)
Main Weapon: Wands and Canes (crafted by Carpenters)
Armor: Crafted by Weavers

Pros
Easy to learn
Great AoE Heals
Great self DPS
Cons
None

White Mage in contrast to Black Mage and his destructive capacity, focuses upon spells of restoration and purification. It is the mainstream Healer class in-game and if you want to learn the ropes on healing this is a rewarding place to start.

In terms of personal damage, White Mage tops all of the Healer jobs while having many forms of instant yet powerful heals. It seems demanding at first, but once you get the hang of it, you can feel the job contributing instead of doing linear rotations on auto-pilot and relying on your party doing all the work.

Scholar (from Arcanist)

Scholar, Academic Set w/ Epeolatry Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: Arcanist (ACN)
Guild: Arcanist’s Guild in Mealvaan’s Gate(X 4.5-Y 11.2), Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks, La Noscea
Disciple: Magic
Availability: Available to new players
Job: Scholar (SCH)
Main Weapon: Books (crafted by Alchemists)
Armor: Crafted by Weavers

Pros
Great Healing
Very high endgame potential
Great Damage Mitigation
Cons
Hard to play

Scholar utilizes cute faeries and uses magicks of different elements to aid his/her allies. Faeries unlike other conjured creatures do not attack, but they passively heal your group and have a plethora of actions they execute on your command.

As the fellow Sage, the Scholar is a Barrier Healer type, working around burst healing your teammates and preventing them from receiving damage with shields. You should consider giving this one a try as it’s highly sought after in parties and alongside the Astrologian is a must have in any raid.

Astrologian

Astrologian, Weathered Soothsayer Set w/ Procyon Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: None
Guild: Astrologian’s Guild in Athenaum Astrologicum(X 15-Y 10), The Pillars, Coerthas
Disciple: Magic
Availability: After you have unlocked the city of Ishgard (Complete all Main Scenario quests including ‘Before The Dawn’) and buying the Heavensward expansion
Job: Astrologian (AST)
Main Weapon: Star Globes (crafted by Goldsmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Weavers

Pros
Great Damage Utility
Very high endgame potential
Great healing
Cons
Looks bland
Lacks personal damage

Astrologian controls fate in the form of Astromancy using tarrot cards with Divination to aid his/her allies. Being flexible with great mobility and able to pick what raid buffs it casts, in the right hands it can turn the tide in the midst of heat.

Highly active and equipped with many tools to keep your party alive – buff the total raid damage while having many instant cast abilities with the reduced spell cast times of Lightspeed and Harmony of Body effect, you can never go wrong with this one.

Sage

Class: None
NPC: Sharlayan Maiden(X 9.4-Y 12.9), Limsa Lominsa, La Noscea
Disciple: Magic
Availability: After you have reached lvl70 as a Disciple of War/Magic and buying the Endwalker expansion
Job: Sage (SGE)
Main Weapon: Nouliths (crafted by Goldsmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Weavers

Pros
Great Damage Mitigation
Fun to play
Good Healing
Cons
Resource Consuming
Hard to play
Little Damage Utility

Sage draws upon the power of aether, through the newly added Nouliths weapon and uses sorcery and medicine to heal and protect his/her allies. In terms of healing the Sage falls off behind his fellow Healer jobs, but he makes up for it in nullifying damage for his party with barriers and having the most damaging spells among them.

In a group the Sage can be a little complex at first glance. There are dungeons where all shields and barriers break instantly, it’s easy to run out of resources if you don’t plan ahead and if the DPS takes needless damage or doesn’t know the mechanics, it can be more punishing. By itself the Sage is not weak if played correctly, it may need more effort to keep the group alive, but it is a blast to play!

Melee DPS

Monk (from Pugilist)

Monk, Anchorite Set w/ Burning Fists Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: Pugilist (PGL)
Guild: Pugilist’s Guild in Platinum Mirage(X 9.4-Y 10.2), Ul’dah-Steps of Nald, Thanalan
Disciple: War
Availability: Available to new players
Job: Monk (MNK)
Main Weapon: Fists (crafted by Blacksmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Leatherworkers

Pros
High DPS
Great Utility for Party
Great Mobility
Cons
Least Popular Job
Muscle Memory Dependant

Monk excels in hand to hand combat, flawing through different forms and excecuting fast combos, it requires good positioning and muscle memory to perform.

As a Monk, one needs to master the rotations and grasping the flow of your forms, while maintaining the correct position to the target. It is a fast-paced job and with its mobility, it feels pleasing if carried out well.

Dragoon (from Lancer)

Dragoon, Tiamat Set w/ Antiquated Ryunohige, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: Lancer (LNC)
Guild: Lancer’s Guild in Wailing Barracks(X 14.1-Y 5.8), Old Gridania, The Black Shroud
Disciple: War
Availability: Available to new players
Job: Dragoon (DRG)
Main Weapon: Polearm (crafted by Carpenters)
Armor: Crafted by Armorers

Pros
High DPS
High Utility for Party
Fancy Animations
Cons
Hard to play

Dragoon takes to the skies, penetrating anything in its path with cool looking armor and a shower of flashy moves.

In its essence, one of the most aggresive in combat, it has one of the most actions per minute, delivering fun and fast-paced gameplay, while providing party utilities that further enchance both self and group damage.

Ninja (from Rogue)

Ninja, Antiquated Iga Set w/ Antiquated Nagi Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: Rogue (ROG)
Guild: Rogue’s Guild in Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks(X 8-Y 16), La Noscea
Disciple: War
Availability: After you complete a lvl10 Class Quest of any (Disciple of War/Magic) and having the Armoury System unlocked
Job: Ninja (NIN)
Main Weapon: Daggers (crafted by Blacksmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Leatherworkers)

Pros
High DPS
High Mobility
Great Survivability
Cons
Hard to play

Ninja is a highly-trained combatant, well versed in the arts of assassination, it weaves signs and uses Ninjutsu to unleash fast and potent combo rotations, throw decent ranged attacks and increase total party damage output with debuffs.

Reasonably complex, the Ninja is high up the ladder concerning it’s rotations and small burst windows, but comes with a kit that allows it to outperform most other DPS on the right hands. It needs practise memorising your mudra combos, but it pays off in the the end.

Samurai

Samurai, Antiquated Myochin Haori Set w/ Augmented Cryptlurker’s Samurai Blade Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: None
NPC: Ul’dahn Citizen in Ul’dah-Steps of Nald(X 9.2-Y 9.1), Thanalan
Disciple: War
Availability: After you have reached lvl50 as a Disciple of War/Magic and buying the Stormblood expansion
Job: Samurai (SAM)
Main Weapon: Katanas (crafted by Blacksmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Leatherworkers

Pros
Highest single-target DPS
Fun to play
Cons
No Utility
Problem getting into Parties

Samurai is a skillful warrior that operates entirely on one straightforward mentality. Wielding its symbolic katanas, it focuses on dealing the most damage to the target, towering over all other DPS jobs.

Dipping into both single-target and AoE actions with extremely high potency, one must lack somewhere else. Unfortunately, the utility it brings to the table is non-existent, the main stumbling block of the Samurai being rejected from many parties.

Reaper

Class: None
NPC: Flustered Attendant in Ul’dah-Steps of Nald(X 12.8-Y 8.6), Thanalan
Disciple: War
Availability: After you have reached lvl50 as a Disciple of War/Magic and buying the Stormblood expansion
Job: Samurai (SAM)
Main Weapon: Katanas (crafted by Blacksmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Leatherworkers

Pros
Very high DPS
Fancy Animations
Great AoE
Cons
Tedious Rotation

Reaper, bearing its ominous Scythes, feeding upon souls of fallen enemies, poses as the most menacing presence in the battlefield. Attached to voidborne creatures fueled by its rotations, it can augment its weaponskills by merging with them.

Overall a pleasing and fun to play melee DPS, the Reaper is a great all-rounder, with a strong debuff, easy positionals and exceptionally good AoE. The only drawback being that it needs to be high level and with content below lvl70 the level sync, thus the loss of many skills, will make it feel boring and less engaging.

Physical Ranged DPS

Bard (from Archer)

Bard, Brioso Set w/ Terpander Lux Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: Archer (ARC)
Guild: Archer’s Guild in Quiver’s Hold(X 15-Y 12), New Gridania, The Black Shroud
Disciple: War
Availability: Available to new players
Job: Bard (BRD)
Main Weapon: Bows (crafted by Carpenters)
Armor: Crafted by Leatherworkers

Pros
Very High Utility
High Mobility
Cons
Low DPS

Bard elegantly assaults its foes with lethal accuracy, roaming around the battlefield granting various buffs depending on the situation, while keeping a safe distance from the enemy.

At its core a utility support-buffer, the Bard suffers from low personal DPS, most of its actions being DoTs (Damage Over Time) slowly applying damage. Being lackluster on the damaging sector, it compensates by vastly increasing the group’s performance with offensive and defensive songs.

Machinist

Machinist, Pioneer Set w/ Ataktos Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: None
Guild: Machinist’s Guild in Skysteel Manufactory(X 8-Y 10), Foundation, Coerthas
Disciple: War
Availability: After you have unlocked the city of Ishgard (Complete all Main Scenario quests including ‘Before The Dawn’) and buying the Heavensward expansion
Job: Machinist (MCH)
Main Weapon: Firearms (crafted by Blacksmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Leatherworkers

Pros
High DPS
Excellent Range
Great Mobility
Cons
Low Utility

Machinist brings forth advanced and violent machinery to rain fire upon its enemies. With the power of magitek, it deploys turrets and makes use of several gadgets.

Having excellent range and frequent burst windows with great mobility, the Machinist in terms of raw damage is the most solid option of the Physical Ranged DPS, the only downside being the little utility it brings to the party.

Dancer

Dancer, Weathered Dancer Set w/ Krishna Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: None
NPC: Eager Lominsan, Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks(X 9.8-Y 12), La Noscea
Disciple: War
Availability: After you have reached lvl60 as a Disciple of War/Magic and buying the Shadowbringers expansion
Job: Dancer (DNC)
Main Weapon: Throwing Weapons (crafted by Blacksmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Leatherworkers

Pros
Great Range
High DPS
Fun to play
Cons
Damage Output is RNG

Dancer rushes through the battlefield throwing its keen chakrams at the enemy, heightening the effectiveness of its kit with dances acting in accordance to a certain tempo.

Sitting on the middleground of the Physical Ranged DPS, the Dancer deals respectable damage, brings benefits to the party and has an easy and straightforward playstyle. Watching out for procs that trigger randomly while it uses its weaponskills, it can cast a stronger version of the same skill.

Magical Ranged DPS

Black Mage (from Thaumaturge)

Black Mage, Spaekona Set w/ Kaladanda Lux Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: Thaumaturge (THM)
Guild: Thaumaturge’s Guild in Arrzaneth Ossuary(X 6-Y 12), Ul’dah-Steps of Nald, Thanalan
Disciple: Magic
Availability: Available to new players
Job: Black Mage (BLM)
Main Weapon: Staves or Scepters and Shields (crafted by Goldsmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Weavers

Pros
Highest DPS
Excellent Range
Great AoE
Cons
Low Mobility
No Utility

Black Mage exerts pressure through sheer destructive force, by shaping aether into potent elemental spells. On par with the Samurai, it is the job capable of dealing the most DPS in the game in the hands of a skilled practitioner.

Proper grasp of the dark arts implies that one must memorize enemy patterns to move accordingly, as the Black Mage comes with longer casting times than its fellows, hindering its mobility completely.

Summoner (from Arcanist)

Summoner, Antiquated Channeler Set w/ Antiquated Lemegeton Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: Arcanist (ACN)

Disciple: Magic
Availability: Available to new players
Job: Summoner (SMN)
Main Weapon: Books (crafted by Alchemists)
Armor: Crafted by Weavers

Pros
High DPS
Excellent AoE
Great Mobility
Cons
Clunky Pet AI

Summoner has the ability to bind beings of primordial power, the Primals, conjuring them into battle, to obliterate any foe.

Opposed to Black Mage, the Summoner deals less in terms of damage, but presents some party utility in terms of damage, has great mobility and can even heal or ressurect allies.

Red Mage

Red Mage, Atrophy Set w/ Wild Rose Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: None
NPC: Distraught Lass in Ul’dah-Steps of Thal(X 14.1-Y 11.7), Thanalan

Job: Red Mage (RDM)
Main Weapon: Rapiers (crafted by Goldsmiths)
Armor: Crafted by Weavers

Pros
High DPS
Crazy Utility
Both Physical and Magic DPS
Cons
Hard Rotation

Red Mage truly encompasses both melee and casting, uniting Black and White magic, it can deal high amounts of damage, pairing ranged and melee and physical as well as magic damage.

Being that versatile in every aspect, Red Mage is more than welcome in any party composition, but it doesn’t end here. It is the only DPS job that can use potent heals and instantly ressurect multiple allies with no cast-time, making every healer jealous.

Blue Mage

Blue Mage, True Blue Set w/ Rainmaker Weapon, FFXIV Class (image by Feluna Aleatory @ Phoenix, EU)

Class: None
NPC: Zealous Yellowjacket in Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks(X 9.9-Y 11), La Noscea

Job: Blue Mage (BLU)
Main Weapon: Canes (Non Craftable)
Armor: Crafted by Weavers

Pros
Fun to play
Great Utility
Cons
Solo Play Only

Blue Mage operates differently than any jobs. It is a Limited Job that can only reach lvl70 and is used primarily for playing Masked Carnivale and open world duties.

It does not have a fixed rotation and learns its actions by imitating monsters it fights in the wild. It is not permitted to participate in any group content, as Deep Dungeons or PvP, but sure offers a fun time collecting different monster actions and using them regardless of level-sync in duties.

Disciples of the Hand

Aside from the rich storyline, epic quests and dungeons filled with great gear and items, Final Fantasy XIV offers a wide variety of crafting professions that with enough experience, can craft items on par and even better to accompany each job.

These professions are part of the Disciples of the Hand and as with any other job, all can be leveled up on the same character.
