Even though this is one of the final dungeons in the game, it's certainly not one of the most difficult, but we've got what you need regardless. In this guide we'll be walking you through every aspect of the Fire Sanctuary dungeon. If you need help finding the dungeon still, you can find everything you'll need in our full walkthrough of the Volcano Summit section of the game. For everything in the Fire Sanctuary, just read down below.

Learning To Use Water Drop Plants, Fire Sanctuary – Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

As soon as you enter the Fire Sanctuary you'll be faced with a pit of lava – appropriate. You won't be able to make it over normally, instead you'll need to use either a Bow or a Slingshot to smack the green plant hanging above the lava. These bulbous plants contain water, and this water will harden on the lava's surface, allowing you to walk on it for a very limited amount of time. You'll be doing this a lot. So shoot that down and hop on over.

We'll be shooting to next bulbous plant too, but this time the lava is flowing, and we can be carried down stream while riding on the rock. Defeat the enemies on the way, and jump onto the platform that will be on your left. Clear this enemy out, and a gate will open revealing a chest with a Small Key – exactly what you need to get into the next area. Unlock the door on the ground floor below and head on through.

This is the main chamber of the dungeon, nestled between the cliffs and rocks of Eldin Volcano. As soon as you enter, head right and take down the enemies before heading through the door. Head right again down the stairs and you'll find yourself overlooking a lava pit with a grate over it. Jump down and climb onto the solitary rock – a lava hand monster from below will lift the rock up, allowing you to access a higher platform. Clear the enemies up here, and then jump on the vines to get across to the next area. Finally you can come all the way around and you'll find yourself above a door into the next section. Just down and open it up.

There's a quick Lizalfos fight on the bridge here, but it's not too challenging. Beat it and head through the door. Make sure to defeat the enemies in the lava and on the other side of the room using your Bow to make it easier, next you need to head up the small fligth of stairs and bomb the lion sculpture spewing lava into the room – you can either use your own bomb and grab it with your Hook Beetle, or send the Beetle to look in the high-up cave, to your left when facing the lion, to find Bomb Flowers. This will cause the lava to start flowing, so you can use the water drop plant hanging over the lava to once again get across the fire and into the next room – there's also a locked door here, take note of that.

Saving The Two Mogma, Fire Sanctuary – Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

In the next area you'll find the first of two Mogma that are strung up and in danger. Saving them will give us rewards and help us progress, of course. First head to the right – you can use the Gust Bellows to get rid of the molten lava pools on the path. There's a chest here with another Small Key to use – now head back to the last locked door you passed.

Going through the locked door, there's another new way to use the water drop plants. If you jab at one of them, they'll stick to your sword – very handy. Head upstairs stand in the centre of the large platform, facing the fire door with the frog tongue above it. Jab at the plant behind you, and then swipe upwards to throw it towards the frog tongue. This might take a few attempts, but the door will eventually open, allowing you to slay the enemies and head on through.

Now we've actually got to fight those weird lava hands from before using the save water drop jab tactic. Jump on one of the rocks in here to be lifted up, giving you access to a water drop plant. Jab it, and then jump back down to the lower level. Move around to tempt the lava hands to appear, and then throw the water drop at them when they do. They'll harden on contact with water, at which point slashing at them with your sword will damage and eventually destroy them. Take them both down, and the lava level in here will drop – and it'll also drop the level of lava in the room where the Mogma is tied up.

There's a door at the bottom here to access the Mogma room again – just head on inside and flip the switch at the bottom of the stairs to free him. He'll gift you with upgraded Digging Mitts, the Mogma Mitts, and these will allow you to crawl into large holes, something you'll need for later. Dig in the soft soil near the grated fence, and head on through. You can hold ZL to see above ground, so you know where you're digging. You can jab to break small rocks, but you'll need to jab and roll bombs to get rid of tougher boulders. Go to the light at the top of this section to escape.

New area now. Use the Gust Bellows to clear out the molten lava in front of you, and dig in the soft soil underneath. When down there, jab at the red switch to flip the gate outside, and then return to go through the next door. Bow the Bokoblins, and then use your Clawshots to cross this bridge.

Inside you'll find the second Mogma that you need to rescue. Dig in the soft soil in the right corner of the room to start exploring. First head to your right to flip the blue switch, and then make your way over to the left to flip the other blue switch. Then exit again. This will give you access to green water drop plants, and you can use this to open the frog tongue door near the Mogma. Once inside, flip the switch on the left to let him down. He'll reward you with a Dungeon Map for the hard work, which is nice. With the dungeon map, you'll see that the wall on your right as you immediately enter this room is fake – blow it up with a bomb and head on through.

Dig into the soft soil once again and immediately make your way to the left side exit without attracting the attention of the centipede enemy down here. When you emerge, you'll find a chest with a Small Key inside, in addition to vines which help you leave this area, returning you to the Mogma room. Exit through the door you entered, and return over the Clawshot bridge.

Getting Inside The Boss Room, Fire Sanctuary – Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

Now, return to the room where you uncovered the soft soil under the molten lava. In this room you'll find the Small Key door you need to unlock. Once through, you'll be in the final area, basically, and this is a big one. There are Bokoblin archers to your left as you go down the stairs, take them out and then drop the water drop plant into the lava to make a bridge to cross. Run up the stairs opposite and through the door. Wipe out the enemies in here and go up the stairs, and down the next flight, and straight into the soft soil hole on your left. In here you'll have to catch up with a Mogma and touch him to him. Open up the gate with the blue switch, head through, and you'll get locked in until you can touch him. Just use stamina and the layout of the maze to your advantage.

Once all done this Mogma will reward you with a Piece of Heart, and will open the gate. Go through the gate, beat the enemies, and bring down a water drop plant for a platform to move across with. Hop over to the next area on your left, and get ready to once again dive into the soft soil here just behind the save statue. Go inside, and blow the vulnerable rocks with the bomb in the centre. Once you're done, it's an Indiana Jones-style crawling escape sequence as the lava chases you. Just use stamina wisely, and you'll be fine.

This will cause the three lion heads to spew lava, and you can stand on the switch here to open the gate, easily returning to the outside area. Get the water drop plant down and ride the platform downstream to the next area on your right.

Now you're at the Bridge of Decision. Jump off the bridge to the left, and fly towards the head carving below. A platform will appear in front of it, and you can go inside. Go through the chamber, and there will be another dual Lizalfos fight for you to take down. Once it's down, climb up the wall and exit out of the new door. Climb the stairs and you'll be inside a large spiral staircase. Head on up, jumping over gaps, using your Clawshots, and beating enemies as needed.

Once at the top you'll be in the boss key room with five stange totems. You need to activate them in the order of how many wings they have, from zero to four. They have switches directly below them you can access through the Soft Soil. Remember to hold ZL to see above ground. You need the first switch immediately in front of you, the next on the left, the one in the top right, the one in the bottom right, and then finally the remainder. You'll need to actually fight the centipede enemy now before leaving – just crawl around it and jab at its butt. Once you climb out, you can finally grab the Mysterious Crystals, which will see us through to the end of this dungeon. Exit the room using the stairs on the right, which will take you back to where the boss door is after flipping a switch to open a gate. The boss is Ghirahim, who we have a guide for right here.
