Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) have announced they will no longer have free upgrades from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 for first-party games; including the God of War sequel and Gran Turismo 7.

Earlier this week, SIE had announced Horizon Forbidden West would not feature a free upgrade from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5. Instead, they would need to purchase certain special editions of the game (Digital Deluxe, Collector’s, or Regalla Editions).

Later, SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan retracted this, and stated the game would have a free upgrade to PlayStation 5. However, this came with the announcement that they would no longer be offering free upgrades.

“I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.”

Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut also featured a paid upgrade path‘ suggesting SIE had been moving towards this decision for a while.

Will Microsoft hold the line and continue to offer free upgrades, or will they follow suit to set a new industry standard?
