Terraria: Eye Of Cthulhu Boss Guide

Quick Links

"You feel an evil presence watching you…" If you read that in the bottom left of your screen it means you'll have to fight the Eye of Cthulhu in the next few seconds. It's the very first boss in Terraria and can catch you off guard if you're not ready.

Because of the set spawn requirements for the Eye, you will likely already have plenty of HP, some decent weapons, and a small village full of NPCs. If you want to be really prepared, though, you'll need a boss arena and some decent weapons. Here's you beat the Eye of Cthulhu.

How To Summon The Eye Of Cthulhu

The Eye of Cthulhu will automatically spawn at the beginning of the game if these set conditions are met:

  • You have 200 HP, collected via Life Hearts.
  • More than 10 defense.
  • At least four NPCs. Watch out, though, as the Traveling Merchant can fill this quota even though it does not live in a building.

The Eye of Cthulhu will also not spawn on its own if you've already beaten it. Because the Eye of Cthulhu will always spawn, it's a good idea to start preparing for the boss fight during your first hour.

Once you've seen it off once, you can then spawn it again to farm for materials and gold. It's spawned with the Suspicious Looking Eye, crafted with 6 Lens at a Demon Altar or Crimson Altar. You can also find the Suspicious Looking Eye in chests in the Cavern and Dungeon layers, or in the Jungle.

Best Weapons To Beat The Eye Of Cthulhu

The Eye of Cthulhu is not necessarily a difficult boss to beat if you're playing in Normal mode, though the boss does get much harder in Master and Expert mode.

For those just starting out, the best weapon to kill the Eye of Cthulhu is anything that has a bit of range. You can use Shurikens, for example, or something like a Platinum Bow. If you've already been into the Corruption and destroyed a couple of Shadow Orbs, you could also pick up a Musket. Although slow-firing, the Musket does enough damage to get rid of the Eye pretty quickly.

  • Melee – Melee weapons aren't overly useful against the Eye of Cthulhu unless you're using a sword to kill the smaller Servants of Cthulhu. You won't have much more than a Platinum or Gold sword at this point, and they will work just fine.
  • Ranged – This is the recommend weapon loadout for the Eye. The Gold or Platinum Bow will make short work of the Eye. You can use a different type of arrow, like Flaming Arrows, although regular arrows will do the trick in normal mode.

Best Armor For The Eye Of Cthulhu Fight

The Eye of Cthulhu will not spawn unless you have 10 defense or more, which means you probably don't have much more than some base ore armor. In fact, before you start killing the first of the two bosses (The Eye of Cthulhu and the Eater of Worlds, if you're playing on a Corruption world) the best armor you can get is the highest tier ore, like Platinum.

  • A set of armor, like Platinum, is great for the fight. However, you can probably get through the fight with Gold or Tungsten, even.
  • Hermes Boots are amazing during the Eye of Cthulhu fight. Obviously, you need to find these speed-boosting boots before you can wear them in the fight…so get hunting for chests.

Fight Strategy And Boss Arena

With the basic weapons and armor at your disposal, defeating the Eye of Cthulhu comes down to having the right boss arena set up. You'll make use of this boss arena throughout the rest of the game, so you might as well start well.

Here's a rundown of the best things to prepare in a boss arena:

  • Platforms. Platforms, platforms, platforms. Build an elevated area of wooden platforms and the Cthulhu boss fight will be much easier.
  • Adjust the height of the platforms so they match how high you can jump. This is obviously a larger distance if you have an accessory like the Cloud in a Bottle.
  • A long platform will also suffice if you have Hermes Boots. Just run back and forwards while dodging the eye as it comes at you.
  • Campfires are really all you have at your disposal in terms of healing during this stage of the game. You can add Heart Lanterns and other buffs later on.

Tips For Farming The Eye Of Cthulhu

Farming the Eye of Cthulhu is a great way to make lots of gold before Hardmode, and all that Demonite (or Crimtane Ore, if you're on a Crimson world) can be used to craft items like the Demon Bow, giving you a massive boost for the next boss fight. Because many items in Hardmode start to cost a lot of gold coins, you'll want a way to prepare for those expensive items.

  • The Eye Of Cthulhu is easy to spawn. You just need 6 Lens, which can be farmed from the smaller eyes that spawn during a regular night.
  • Take those Lens to a Demon Altar or Crimson Altar and craft the Suspicious Looking Eye.
  • Make sure to start the fight at around 7:30 PM in-game time. If you have a good setup, you can kill two or three Eyes in a single night.
