Former UFC Fighter Yoel Romero Says Jake Paul Canceled Talks to Fight Easier Opponent

Boxing matches draw a considerable crowd, and not just those between professional boxers. Celebrities have begun to throw their hats in the ring as well. With some of these celebrity boxing fights garnering millions of views and dollars, it's no wonder that these matches continue to happen. However, a former UFC star claimed that content creator turned boxer Jake Paul declined a match because he was afraid to fight him.

Jake Paul is a controversial figure, to say the least. He started as a social media personality along with his brother Logan Paul. Over the past couple of years, the Paul brothers have started to get involved in boxing matches. While Logan Paul fought Floyd Mayweather, one of the most famous boxers of all time, Jake Pual has had success in the ring as well. Starting his boxing career against other content creators such as Deji and AnEsonGib, he then went on to fight professional athletes such as Nate Robinson. However, some claim that he only fights those he is confident he can defeat.

In a recent interview on The MMA Hour, the former UFC middleweight fighter Yoel Romero revealed that he was in talks to fight Jake Paul. However, it seems that Paul was hesitant to follow through with the challenge. According to Romero, Paul initially wanted to fight him, but once the UFC fighter showed interest, Paul’s team canceled the fight. Instead of fighting Romero, Paul’s team set up a fight against Ben Askren.

Romero went on to give his reasoning for why he believed Paul decided to not fight him. The UFC fighter claimed that Paul, who is already unpopular with some UFC fans, backed out of the fight because Askren was the easier opponent. Furthermore, Romero believed that the Paul brothers want to take on easier opponents that they feel they can beat instead of challenging “real” fighters. From Romero’s perspective, the Paul brothers' fights are more about spectacle and less about the competition.

With the Paul brothers showing that there is an audience for celebrity boxing matches, it will be interesting to see what other content creators decide to jump into the ring. Recently, fans of the popular streamer Dr. Disrespect suggested that the Doc fight Hasan Piker. While the 6’8” streamer seems like he could hold his own in a boxing match, he shot down the idea, claiming that he didn’t know who Hasan Piker even was. Nevertheless, it seems inevitable that more fights are in the cards involving top content creators in the future.
