Fortnite: How to Reveal an Opponent with a Recon Scanner, then Hit Them With a Rail Gun

Fortnite Recon Scanner Rail Gun Quest Challenge Guide

Fortnite is rolling out its Week 9 quest challenges, offering players large sums of XP as a reward for completing certain tasks around the island. One of these quests tasks players with utilizing IO weapons to execute a specific offensive strategy: revealing an opponent using a Recon Scanner, then hitting them with a Rail Gun.

Epic Games' popular free-to-play battle royale title is now in the last month of its Season 7. The current season has seen an array of futuristic and alien weaponry thanks to the ongoing alien invasion, including more recent additions like the Prop-ifier and Grab-itron weapons.

While this particular Fortnite quest's directive is overtly straightforward, players will want to follow a general strategy to set themselves up for success. Firstly, players will need to acquire both the Recon Scanner and Rail Gun. Considering both of these are IO Weapons, the easiest places to find them is in the IO Chests. These chests can be found at any of the Satellite Stations around the island, as well as Corny Complex. Once players have found both weapons, it then becomes a matter of finding an opponent.

Several of Fortnite's Week 9 quests involve the IO Satellite Stations, like driving an IO vehicle with off-road tires, so there shouldn't be a shortage of opponents in the area. The Recon Scanner launches a large area-of-effect round which marks any player within range regardless of structures, illuminating them with a red silhouette.

Once an opponent has been marked, players must then quickly switch to the Rail Gun, which just so happens to be capable of penetrating walls. Players can blanket the immediate area using multiple Recon Scanner rounds, then aim for the most opportune enemy. If players can manage to damage or eliminate the marked opponent, the quest will be complete.

Given that plenty of Fortnite players will be dropping in at the Satellite Stations, things may get pretty dicey, pretty quickly. Those looking for a less initially confrontational alternative can opt for the loot-filled mothership, should the Abductors spawn in-game.

Recon Scanners only exist in Rare/blue rarity, so players need only to get to that level in the treasure room, where they have a good chance at sourcing the necessary weapons for the quest. It should be noted the quest reportedly works with IO Guards, which are usually the easiest targets.

Players who complete this quest will be rewarded with 30,000 XP. Fortnite is offering much more than its usual batch of new quests this week. Between the quests, Street Fighter's Cammy and Guile, as well as musical artist Ariana Grande and her Rift Tour concert coming this week, the battle royale has plenty of content to keep its fans entertained.

Fortnite is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
