Free Guy Has A Ton Of Easter Eggs Ryan Reynolds Slipped Past Disney

Free Guy is all about video games and every sneak peek of the movie seen so far suggests it honors all the games that inspired it in the funniest way possible, however, gaming references are not alone as Ryan Reynolds was surprised over how much leeway Disney gave them to use the company’s properties.

Disney’s 20th Century Fox Acquisition not only came bundled with the X-Men and the movie that Reynolds is currently most famous for, Deadpool, it also brought along other films in early development like Free Guy under its corporate wing. Since then Reynolds has been quite vocal over his excitement of working on his own video game adventure, maybe because this time he wasn’t shackled by the furry CGI coating that came with playing Detective Pikachu.

During an interview with The A.V. Club, Reynolds went over his excitement about Free Guy by commenting that for some “inexplicable reason, Disney allowed us to do some things and use some toys of Disney’s that we would never thought they would have said yes to or agreed to”. The actor obviously claims he’s more than happy with that decision which should only further add to the possibly iconic gaming nods seen in Free Guy’s posters, even though Reynolds confesses he never had the opportunity to get into video games as a kid.

Funnily enough, Reynolds recalled Mike Tyson’s Punch Out and Double Dragon as some of his first experiences with video games, something that must have resurfaced when he agreed to work on a Pokemon movie as well as Free Guy. In any case, Reynolds promises Free Guy won’t be one of those movies that are just setting up a profitable sequel.

Few things sum up Reynolds' attitude regarding Free Guy like him saying it’s meant to give off the same vibes Back To The Future gave him as a kid. Reynolds won’t be short of a great supporting cast as he’s joined by co-stars Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, and Lil Rel Howery, plus a bunch of cameos from the likes of Dwayne Johnson, Hugh Jackman, John Krasinski, Tina Fey, Ninja, Pokimane, and the late Alex Trebek, so adding some Disney representation would definitely make up for an interesting mix.

In the grand scheme of things, Free Guy is for sure being warmly welcomed by the gaming landscape with special Free Guy skins in Fornite, and even a special edition Xbox Series S console giveaway to commemorate the film that may or may not be tied to possible Halo references in it given Master Chief forgot he parked his car the movie's red carpet premiere.

Free Guy is scheduled for release in theaters on August 13, 2021.
