Free-to-play games on Xbox consoles no longer require Xbox Live Gold as of today, Microsoft has announced.
The new shift to make free-to-play games on Xbox consoles no longer require Xbox Live Gold comes after Microsoft tried to raise the price of the Xbox Live Gold subscription, garnering quite a lot of backlash. Microsoft then apologized and dropped the price increase while also announcing they would drop the Xbox Live Gold subscription for free-to-play games.
Following the news that free-to-play games no longer require Xbox Live Gold, Microsoft confirmed they were already testing the changes in no longer requiring the subscription, as they have required a sub for many years now. In comparison, Nintendo and Sony haven’t required Nintendo Switch Online or PlayStation Plus to play free-to-play games.
Microsoft noted with today’s official change, over 50 free-to-play games can now be played on Xbox devices now without an Xbox Live Gold membership – you can find a list of all 50+ games here, as well as below.
