Does it make sense to own both? (pic: Metro)

Double whammy
Happy New Year to all at GameCentral! The gaming gods were good to me over Christmas and I’m now the proud owner of a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, marking my entry to the bit-big era of consoles. I have both standing vertically, as while the PlayStation 5 fits within the unit I didn’t think it’d be able to breathe, and the Xbox Series X is such an odd shape for a console that IKEA were clearly caught flat-footed.

My initial impressions of both have been very positive, with the DualSense and Astro’s Playroom being the highlights so far. I can understand why you found the game derivative (but still enjoyed it) but to me it was a flawless introduction to the new console and controller, while celebrating everything that had come before.

The way the trigger feedback is altered during different actions is tremendous, and if Nathan Drake or Kratos aren’t climbing like monkeys in subsequent games I’ll be disappointed. Hopefully the unique DualSense features are something that developers will make use of rather than being quickly forgotten about.

All-in-all things are looking bright for both consoles.

Happy gift
Hope everyone had a happy Christmas and new year. I sure did, as I got a PlayStation 5 and a copy of Returnal and I’ve been enjoying it ever since. The game is brutal but for me, as a lover of arcade shooters, it’s a more enjoyable experience than the Dark Souls games and I love the tone and atmosphere of Lovecraftian menace.

I could have done with just a little more storytelling/characterisation, as I think they’re playing it a little bit too secretive, but overall a great game. It probably could be done on PlayStation 4 but it runs super smooth on my PlayStation 5 and together with Astro’s Playroom has made it seem all worthwhile.

With Horizon Forbidden West due relatively soon and news of a spin-off for PlayStation VR2 I’d say the future is looking very encouraging. I like that Sony started early with the news this year and I hope we’ll get a regular supply now, as they kept very quiet all through the last half of last year.

Long, long wait
Been watching The Book of Boba Fett and once again it’s super obvious how well suited the Star Wars universe’s criminal underbelly is to a video game. So it’s a bit annoying that nobody has ever really tried to make a game based around it.

I am willing to bet that Ubisoft’s open world game is set on Tatooine though, with either the Mandalorian or Boba Fett, but there’s so much more they can do than that. I really want a bounty hunter/smuggler simulator where I can create my own character and being a tie-in to a show is going to stop that.

I really hope that something official gets announced soon though because it’s been a long while since a new Star Wars game has come out and I’m getting antsy. Especially as Star Wars: Eclipse is years away/by a bad developer.

Christmas free
I hope GameCentral and all their readers had a good Christmas. I hope you managed to get all the free games over Christmas from Epic Games Store each day. I forgot a couple of days to get them, but I know they will be given away free again as they have done that before. The free game on Epic Games Store is Gods Will Fall from 4pm on Thursday, 6th January.

Just completed: Shadow Of The Colossus remake on PlayStation 5. No spoilers, but I did miss a lot of the ending when I played it on PlayStation 2, when I had a knock on the door from a friend during the ending.

GC: That was no friend.

Not fragging true
I’m writing with a request. I’m seeing a lot of social media posts and replies that feel remarkably like I’m reading a dystopian version of The Emperor’s New Clothes, except it’s called the Emperor’s New Fangled Tokens.

There seems to be a consensus among those who don’t understand how complex games are that they’re going to be able to transfer their favourite sword from For Honor to New World. You can replace either of these games with any you choose, as they’re almost equally nonsensical.

Could you draw some attention to this and perhaps write a piece on the innumerable complexities of getting an object to work correctly in one game, let alone porting it to another for use by a single individual?

I’ve seen people argue that even if a game shuts down, they have the item forever so they can just use it in new titles.

I feel this lie is being used to sell NFTs to the masses, who know not what they are championing.

I feel utterly disheartened by the latest Square Enix announcement. What on earth is happening? I feel like reality is coming apart with these awful things. How can so many people want to pursue crypto and all that’s associated with it knowing the scale of the damage they cause, let alone the morality of making any sort of profit from NFTs.
Matt

GC: We’ve not actually heard that one before, but as you say it’s nonsense. Although we suppose it’s possible publishers such as Ubisoft could make them compatible between some of their own games, since many have very similar elements.

Prehistoric remake
Loved the news about the fan remake of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica, even if I’ve got a nasty feeling Capcom are going to shut it down before it’s released. What I’d really liked to see though is a remake of Dino Crisis. I know the most recent rumours point towards it not happening but maybe a fan remake can fill the gap?

The only one I know of released this video a while back, but as you can see it’s just of Regina. I’d love to see a new Dino Crisis though. I just don’t understand why Capcom doesn’t give it a go again.

Heart Story Engine Z
I see that Sony has just confirmed the name of the second generation of VR headset.

Which got me thinking, what would an Xbox VR headset be called? My guess is Xbox Goggles 1 VR Series 360 One XS. Maybe that’s too straightforward.

Long time reader, but haven’t written since the Teletext days. I’ve got a games backlog dating back that far too.

Thanks for the wonderful work throughout the years.
Ed

GC: That name actually describes the product, there’s no way they’d use it.

Backwards reality
I’m glad that more info is being drip fed from Sony regarding PlayStation VR2 but the only thing I’m truly interested in right now (for the purposes of selling my current kit while it’s still worth a bob or two) is whether it will be backwards compatible with PlayStation VR1 games.

It would be fantastic if it were but as PlayStation VR2 won’t rely on a plug-in camera to track lights on the headset and controllers, as per PlayStation VR1, you have to wonder whether the technology will be so different that it would be beyond a simple patch to enable backwards compatibility.

I don’t want to have an entirely separate headset to indulge in the odd game of Astro Bot or Resident Evil 7.

PS: On the topic of backward compatibility. Fellow reader Beems was lamenting the inability to hook up his PlayStation 2 to a modern TV. It’s a bit of a rabbit hole topic but he may want to check out products sold by Retro Gaming Cables and RetroTINK, the latter of which another reader mentioned a few weeks ago.

Inbox also-rans
The PlayStation VR2 sounds great and all but it also sounds really expensive. I don’t see how it’s anywhere less than £300 and probably quite a bit more. I guess the idea is they aren’t mainstream whatever happens so why not go all out?
Buddy

Since Guardians Of The Galaxy seems to have been a bit of a flop (very unjustly in my view) I wonder what’s going to happen to that team? A sequel seems unlikely to me but I’d hate to see them broken up and would love for them to make something new that’s perhaps an original IP.
