Fans of 2020's Ghostrunner just received some incentives to revisit the neon soaked streets around Dharma Tower via an update. The update in question adds two new game modes in the form of Wave Mode and Assist Mode, as well as some new cosmetic DLC for some added visual flair.
Ghostrunner is punishingly difficult. The game pits players against incredibly deadly foes with nothing but a sword and some cybernetic enhancements. Now, players who really want to test their skills can do so with the game's new Wave Mode. This new mode is a roguelike-inspired gauntlet that throws wave after wave of enemies at the player. The waves become more difficult with each advancement, but players get to select random upgrades between rounds to even the playing field. These upgrades range from new abilities such as the short range Blink to passive enhancements that can give players an edge.

While this mode is available to all players, the game's aforementioned difficulty can be daunting. That is where Ghostrunner's other new mode comes into play. Assist Mode is meant to ease the burden of the game's punishment. The new mode gives players three toggleable options that increase their chances of survival. With these options, players can decrease their ability cooldown times, add an extra hit before death, and slow down the gameplay itself. By giving players more options, 505 Games hopes to reel in new players that may have initially been scared off by the game's steep learning curve.
Wave Mode in particular adds some much needed replayability to Ghostrunner. While its fast-paced parkour action is fun, it needed that extra "something" to keep players coming back for more. This new mode should be enough to keep players engaged. Hopefully, Ghostrunner's inevitably approaching sequel will keep this new mode in mind and expand on it in the future.
The final piece of this update is some new cosmetic DLC via the Neon Pack. The pack introduces 4 new sword kits called Neon Night, Afterglow, Luminesense, and Glint. It also includes 4 new glove colors sharing the same names. As the name implies, each new kit is wonderfully bright and over the top, allowing players to have a few more customization options. Now, players will be able to slice their way through Dharma Tower with an increased emphasis on fashion for the price of $4.99.
Ghostrunner is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
