Guitar Hero Fan Shows Off Custom Made Controller Created From Mosquito Zapper

Guitar Hero was such a cultural phenomenon in the mid-2000s that it spawned an entire franchise, including sequels and spin-offs. While the first iteration used a guitar controller for immersion, the game also had releases on different systems. This resulted in many different control schemes and peripherals being created as well. One fan managed to create their own version of the Guitar Hero controller using an unconventional device.

The idea of the games was first created by the original publisher RedOctane, with the studio behind its development being Harmonix, after the runaway success of Japanese rhythm games. The franchise proved to be a massive success, where the guitar peripheral was incredibly useful to immerse players into the experience of rocking out. Since then, players have used the guitar in various self-imposed challenges. One gamer even managed to beat Dark Souls 3 using the guitar controller. One other fan decided that this controller could be recreated with the use of a mosquito zapper.

A user by the name of Tominator2000 posted to Reddit that when they first played the game on the PS2, they originally didn't have Guitar Hero's controller. However thanks to some ingenuity on their part, they were able to create a custom version of the controller, sharing photos to the r/gaming subreddit. According to the user, it required the use of a knock-off version of the PS2's DualShock controller combined with a mosquito zapper. This even includes a mercury switch on the controller to activate Guitar Hero's Star Power mechanic.

Considering a mosquito zapper racket's size and shape fits the same structure as a guitar, it is a creative way of repurposing the device into a controller. Fellow users on the subreddit were shocked, commenting on the amount of engineering knowledge that would be required to accomplish this. Others joked that any poor insects in the vicinity would be zapped upon entering a play session of Guitar Hero.

While the franchise has been put on hiatus for the time being by Activision, the series still has a strong nostalgic following. For many fans, the feeling of these games was an experience that they wish would get a modern reboot or remaster. That being said, Ubisoft has a spiritual successor to the Guitar Hero series in the form of the upcoming Rocksmith sequel. This game is being developed by the original team, Harmonix, which also aims to teach players how to play the guitar properly.
