Hades Wins First Hugo Award for Best Video Game

Hades

Supergiant Games’ Hades has received tons of praise and accolades since release, and you can add one more prestigious title to the list. Announced at the 79th annual Worldcon, the rogue-lite action title won Best Video Game at the Hugo Awards, beating out competitors like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, The Last of Us Part 2, Animal Crossing New Horizons and many others.

Hades writer and Supergiant creative director Greg Kasavin gave a televised acceptance speech, giving his thanks and hoping that “the Hugo Awards continue to recognize the amazing work being done in this space.” Though this year’s Best Video Game award was meant to be a one-time thing, DisCon3 co-chair Colette Fozard said that the Hugo Study Committee is considering ” Best Game or Interactive Experience as a potential permanent category.”

Hades is currently available for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch, having launched last year out of early access. It stars Zagreus, the son of Hades who seeks to escape the Underworld – and his father – by any means necessary. Armed with different weapons and Boons from the Greek Pantheon, Zagreus battles through various realms and bosses across a continuous storyline.
