Halo Infinite’s Coatings Can be Unlocked Through Gameplay as Well, Developer Assures

Recently, 343 Industries talked about Halo Infinite’s new coatings system for cosmetic customization. Since then, there have been plenty of questions about the nature of the system and how it will be monetized, with many wondering whether these coatings will be restricted to microtransactions and other additional purchases (343’s aforementioned update puts quite a bit of emphasis on “opportunities to score armor coatings” by purchasing “Mega Construx toys to Monster Energy drinks to Mondelez cookies, candies, and more”).

Recently, 343 Industries’ community to manager John Junyszek took to Twitter to clear away some of those questions. Junyszek assured in one of his tweets that coatings will be one of several kinds of cosmetic customizations, and that though they can be purchased, they can also be earned in-game and as special rewayrds.

“Will there be purchases? Sure,” Junyszek said. “Is that the only way? Absolutely not.”

Halo Infinite is due out some time in 2021 for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. No new specific release date has been decided yet, and 343 Industries do not planning on dropping the Xbox One version from their plans.

Recently, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that 343 Industries could potentially decide to release the game’s campaign and multiplayer component separately. Read more about that through here.

"Coatings (and therefore colors) can only be purchased?! >:("

No, that is not the case. There will be all kinds customization items (including coatings) that can be earned in-game and earned as special rewards. Will there be purchases? Sure. Is that the only way? Absolutely not.
