Halo Made A Surprise Appearance At The Free Guy Premiere

Halo Infinite's beta test may be over for now, but with so much time until the game’s launch, 343 Industries let the Free Guy cast borrow one of Master Chief’s warthogs for the premiere of Ryan Reynolds’ upcoming video game movie.

Originally scheduled for release last year, Free Guy will now be premiering next week to plenty of expectations after early reviewers are going as far as calling Free Guy the best video game movie ever. Instead of adapting a popular game franchise, the film crafts its own open-world game where Reynolds stars as an NPC underdog who’s destined to save the game from deletion, all while encountering endless amounts of gaming easter eggs for fans to enjoy.

Up until now, almost all of Free Guy's specific game references have been kept secret. However, having a Halo warthog grace the movie’s red carpet premiere in New York could signal Halo is just one of many franchises making surprise appearances in the movie. Naturally, Reynolds took the chance to pose right next to this real-life scale warthog. Streaming star Ninja did the same, something that 343 Industries was happy to flaunt on social media.

It bears saying that Ninja isn’t the only popular Twitch streamer set to appear in Free Guy as Pokimane will also show up for a cameo, and both are being joined by plenty of acting talent with the likes of Dwayne Johnson, Hugh Jackman, Tina Fey, and John Krasinski getting brief appearances too. Since the tweet’s caption boasts the warthog’s versatility for all terrains, whether it’s New Mombassa or in the movie’s Free City, maybe there’s some hope for Master Chief and Cortana to show up as well since Grand Theft Auto 5 modders have already managed to put a warthog in Los Santos before.

One of the most highlighted elements by Free Guy'scritics were the kind of video game-related surprises the film packs for fans, meaning Halo could be just one of many iconic properties to deliver on that promise. After all, with Reynolds and Taika Waititi on board, Free Guy already has Wade Wilson's backing as well, as seen in the perfect excuse for Deadpool's first real MCU crossover.

It may not be Master Chief in action just yet, nevertheless, it appears that Free Guy can truly be that blend of old and new that Halo Infinite aims to be for fans of the franchise in terms of game-related movies. Fortunately, those eager to see Free Guy will only have to run away from spoilers for just one more week, unlike the rest of the folks trying to avoid Halo Infinite’s story getting ruined for them.

Free Guy is scheduled for release in theaters on August 13, 2021.
