Those of you who have played No Man's Sky for a while will be able to find a settlement very quickly. Simply load in to your latest save and fly into space.

As you fly around in space, you will get a call from a nearby settlement asking for help. This will generate a beacon to the settlement that you can follow.

However, if you want to jump into No Man's Sky for the first time or start over, you might be wondering how long it takes to get your first settlement.

To figure this out, we started a new save and played through the tutorial until we were able to communicate with a settlement.

In our save, it took between two to three hours to find our first settlement. We had to complete Awakening (the tutorial mission) and Alone Amidst The Stars. That means you'll need to complete a few tasks, including repairing your ship and making a portable refiner. After completing both missions, we were contacted by a settlement and got the beacon.

When you arrive at the settlement, you need to head to the pillar in the centre of town. You will find a Settlement Hub Interface that you can use.

Interact with the settlement hub and select apply to be overseer in the menu.

This will bring up a screen showing a few stats about the settlement, including the settlers' happiness level, the current population, the running costs, and how much money the settlement will earn per day.

Before you can start running your settlement, you need to build your Overseer's Office. This will require some basic materials, such as Ferrite Dust and Metal Plating. Gather the materials needed and donate them using the Overseer's Office construction terminal.

When you have supplied all of the necessary materials, you can enter your office and start making official decisions for your humble town.
