How To Build A Buggy In Astroneer

Exploration is a lot of fun in Astroneer. Walking around planets, discovering new caves filled with resources to collect, and finding useful items amongst debris is great. However, doing all that whilst driving around in a fast Rover is even better.

This guide will cover everything that you need to know to build each of the three Rover vehicles in Astroneer. Regardless of whether you are trying to get your first Buggy or upgrade to the biggest land vehicle available, you will find everything you need to know here.

How To Get A Land Vehicle In Astroneer

There are many kinds of land vehicles in Astroneer. If you want to haul resources between multiple bases, you could use the Tractor and tow some trailers along. If you'd rather whiz around planets in style and explore new areas, you'll want either the Buggy, the Medium Rover, or the Large Rover.

How To Build The Buggy In Astroneer

The Buggy is a small, lightweight vehicle that can store two small items on the back whilst you travel. It has an internal battery that you can charge to keep it running, but if you want to travel for a long time, we recommend attaching a small battery to one of the small item slots to keep it powered for longer. To craft the Buggy, you need to go to a Medium Printer and use:

  • 1x Compound
  • 1x Aluminum

Compound is easily found scattered around the surface of any planet in Astroneer. Aluminum is made by smelting Laterite in the Smelting Furnace. Since Laterite can be found commonly in caves on every planet, the Buggy is a very easy vehicle to craft for beginners.

To sit in the Buggy and drive it, you will also need to build a Rover seat. This can be made using two pieces of Compound at a Small Printer. When you have the Buggy and the Rover Seat, you can put them together, charge the Buggy battery, and get driving.

How To Build The Medium Rover In Astroneer

The Medium Rover provides much more storage space, so it is very useful if you are transporting lots of resources between bases, or if you are going on a long mining expedition to stock up on essentials. It also has a battery that can be charged, just like the Buggy. To craft the Medium Rover, you need to unlock the recipe in the blueprint menu for 3,750 Bytes. After that, you can go to the Medium Printer and build one using:

  • 2x Plastic
  • 1x Rubber

Obtaining Plastic and Rubber is a bit more complicated than the Compound and Aluminum needed for the Buggy, but we'll walk you through it.

How To Get Plastic In Astroneer

Plastic is made by combining Compound and Carbon in the Chemistry Lab. To get the Carbon that you need to make Plastic, simply smelt some Organic (which you get by digging plants found on the surface of most planets).

How To Get Rubber In Astroneer

Rubber is also made using the Chemistry Lab. To create Rubber in Astroneer, simply mix Organic and Resin in the Chemistry Lab.

When you have the Plastic and Rubber that you need, you can use the Medium Printer to make the Medium Rover.

How To Build The Large Rover In Astroneer

The Large Rover allows for unparalleled storage space whilst exploring, so it is something that you should certainly attempt to make. Before you can build it, you must unlock the Large Rover recipe for 5,000 Bytes. Afterward, you can craft the Large Rover at the Large Printer using the following items:

  • 2x Exo Chip
  • 1x Aluminum Alloy
  • 1x Rubber

Rubber can be obtained easily using our method above, whilst Exo Chips are found by destroying Exo Caches. For more information on that, you can check out our VTOL guide, which explains everything you need to know to get Exo Chips. That just leaves Aluminum Alloy, which you can make using our Alloy guide here.
