How to unlock the Vex Mythoclast exotic fusion rifle in Destiny 2

Destiny 2 Vex Mythoclast

The Vex Mythoclast, one of the most powerful exotic weapons in Destiny history, has finally returned to Destiny 2 in Season of the Splicer. Here’s how you get the Vex Mythoclast in Destiny 2 by diving into the Vault of Glass.

Throughout Destiny’s first year, there was one weapon that reigned supreme over all others. A weapon so rare that every Guardian was trying to track it down — the Vex Mythoclast.

This exotic fusion rifle was an absolute monster across both PVE and PVP. In just one or two rapid bursts, targets would be obliterated without time to react. Multiple nerfs and balance adjustments were required to scale the Mythoclast back, but its original power is still a terrifying memory for veteran Guardians.

Years have now passed and with the return of the Vault of Glass raid in Season of the Splicer, Bungie confirmed the iconic weapon would be making a comeback as well. Here’s everything there is to know about the Vex Mythoclast in Destiny 2.

The Vex Mythoclast was once a rare drop from Atheon in the Vault of Glass.

Back when Destiny first launched, the Vex Mythoclast was undoubtedly the hardest weapon to acquire. While the Gjallarhorn was just an exceptionally rare drop, the Mythoclast was both exceptionally rare and extremely difficult to acquire.

The only way to obtain the exotic fusion rifle was by beating Atheon on Hard Mode in the Vault of Glass, and this was no easy task. Even upon beating the giant Vex foe, the weapon still wasn’t a guaranteed drop, meaning you’d have to try and try again until you got lucky.

Fortunately for both veterans and newcomers alike, obtaining the Mythoclast in Destiny 2 is a bit easier — in a manner of speaking.

While many had speculated the weapon would be locked behind the raid’s new Challenge Mode or a specific Triumph, players have discovered that the Mythoclast is simply a random drop from normal raid clears — similar to the Eyes of Tomorrow rocket launcher found in the Deep Stone Crypt raid.

This means that while you’ll still need to complete the raid by defeating Atheon, you won’t need to face off against the boss on harder difficulties or under any special circumstances. Simply put in the time, and cross your fingers for a Mythoclast drop sooner rather than later.

How to unlock the Vex Mythoclast Catalyst in Destiny 2

Finding the Vex Mythoclast Catalyst in Destiny 2 will have you heading back into the Vault of Glass.

Once you’ve got the Vex Mythoclast in your hands, it’s time to head back into the Raid. There are five hidden plates throughout the revamped Vault of Glass in Destiny 2. These can only be triggered with the Vex Mythoclast.

Secret Vault of Glass plate locations

  • Immediately to the right of the spawn location before you enter the Vault.
  • Hidden in the secret pathway before you reach the Templar fight.
  • Underneath the pathway to the Templar fight – same location as Destiny 1’s Exotic Chest.
  • To the right of the jumping puzzle on the way to Atheon.
  • To the left of the jumping puzzle on the way to Atheon.

Upon finding each of these plates, a set of Oracles will appear and you’ll need to take them down as per usual. This means paying attention to their order and shooting them in the same sequence.

When the fifth and final set of Oracles are cleared, the Catalyst will be yours. This generates Orbs with rapid kills and keeps track of your total kill count as well. Moreover, the unique aspect of this Catalyst provides an increase to weapon stability with higher stacks of Overcharge.

Vex Mythoclast drop rate in Destiny 2

The Vex Mythoclast is one of the most sought-after weapons in Destiny 2, and let’s just say the drop rate has caused a lot of frustration among players.

Reddit user “nutty-max” ran a full analysis breaking down what he believes to be this weapon’s drop rate after defeating Atheon. By analyzing the data of 10,000 player inventories, he concluded that the Vex Mythoclast had a drop rate just of 1%.

Upon further digging, he also theorized that there was a “bad luck” system put in place that increased the chances of the Vex Mythoclast dropping for a player who hadn’t received it yet. While this is somewhat good news, Bungie has not confirmed anything.

So, if you haven’t received your Vex Mythoclast as yet, your best bet is to keep trying.

With the return of the Mythoclast, everyone is curious as to how it will be balanced. Will we see it dominate the entire season or will it be more in line with other fusion rifles?

Thanks to data from light.gg, we have a good idea of where it falls. Below is a look at the base stats for the Vex Mythoclast in Destiny 2.

Base Weapon Stats
Impact 33
Range 41

While these are just the base stats, perks buff just about every aspect of the weapon. Arrowhead Brake adds +10 Handling and +30 Recoil control. Hand-Laid Stock adds +10 Stability and Volatile Battery adds a whopping 40 rounds to the magazine, rounding to a total of 65 shots in each clip.

How has the Vex Mythoclast changed in Destiny 2?

The Vex Mythoclast is still a fast-firing fusion rifle in Destiny 2.

While the weapon has returned in its original form, there’s one major change that could impact the Mythoclast in Destiny 2’s sandbox. The weapon still fires a single bolt with each trigger pull, making it a unique outlier for the weapon archetype. However, a brand-new perk has been added to the mix as well.

Temporal Unlimiter now adds stacks of Overcharge to the gun upon killing enemies, and when the Mythoclast is Overcharged, you can swap modes. Toggling the new alt-fire lets you hold the trigger to charge up powerful linear fusion shots.

The addition of Temporal Unlimiter turns the Mythoclast into an auto-fusion rifle hybrid, and once again cements it as one of Destiny’s most unique, iconic guns. If you’ve been lucky enough to get your hands on the gun, enjoy it, and if not you’ll need to keep beating Atheon to a pulp until the coveted weapon drops.
