Iizuka Says The Sonic Rangers Reveal Was "A Bit Premature"

Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has said that the recent reveal of Sonic's next game was "a bit premature".

As reported by Nintendo Life, Takashi Iizuka talked with 4Gamer about the reveal of the upcoming Sonic game, widely believed to be called Sonic Rangers, and said that it might have been revealed a little earlier.

Iizuka said, "We haven’t announced a brand new action game for the Sonic series since Sonic Forces, and that caused fans to worry. While it was a bit premature, I wanted to at least take the occasion of the 30th anniversary to announce that a brand new title was in development.”

From these comments, it's clear that the reason we still haven't heard much about Sonic's next adventure is that it was revealed a little too early to coincide with the 30th anniversary. Beyond the short tease, we've not heard anything about the new game, despite it seemingly releasing next year. The most concrete bits of information we've received come from Sega accidentally leaking the name to be Sonic Rangers.

The interview also asked about the symbol shown at the end of the Sonic 2022 trailer. Iizuka said that "It is something symbolic that appears in the game, but the meaning is still a secret. However, I will say that it’s not something one would figure out through deduction. we’ll eventually share more details, so please wait a little longer.”

After Sonic 2022 was revealed and the title was leaked as Rangers, one Twitter user rearranged the symbol to spell out Sonic Rangers. Doing so works surprisingly well and fits the title, which makes it seems like Iizuka's comments here that the symbol isn't able to be figured out "through deduction" are in reference to the game's name. Without the prior knowledge that the game is called Sonic Rangers, there's no way that people would have figured to try and make those symbols fit that title, after all.
